Claims
- 1. A transport system for moving a test sample card having a plurality of sample wells and first and second edges relative to an optical system for reading said sample wells, comprising:
- a ledge means for maintaining alignment of said card relative to said optical system, said ledge means defining a card slot receiving said first edge of said card, said card slot defining a card travel direction;
- a drive assembly for said card, said drive assembly comprising:
- a) a drive belt movable relative to said ledge means in a direction parallel to said card travel direction, said drive belt engaging said second edge of said card to move said card relative to said optical system, said drive belt supported by at least one roller;
- b) means for driving said belt;
- c) spring means for biasing said drive assembly towards said ledge means so as to maintain pressure between said card, said ledge means and said belt;
- d) said drive belt sliding said card relative to said ledge means in said card travel direction without substantial slippage between said drive belt and said second edge of said card, thereby permitting said means for driving said belt to move said card relative to said optical system with substantial precision.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein said ledge means further comprises a surface defining said card slot, said surface characterized by a low coefficient of friction.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein said optical system comprises a transmittance optical system and wherein said motor is operative to move said card in a plurality of discrete steps in said card travel direction so as to enable a plurality of transmittance measurements at different locations of said wells in said card.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein said drive belt comprises a substantially inelastic material.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein said drive assembly further comprises a plurality of rollers supporting said belt arranged parallel to said ledge means, and wherein said rollers form a supporting drive surface for said belt and said card.
- 6. The system of claim 1, wherein transport system is installed in a machine including an incubation station for incubating said cards, said incubation station having a card removal opening, and wherein:
- said motor and drive belt are operable between forward and reverse directions, permitting said cards to be moved out of said card removal opening in a first direction into a reading position relative to said optical system and in a second direction opposite to said first direction out of said reading position back into said card removal opening thereby permitting said cards to be moved back and forth from said incubation station to said optical system.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein said optical system further comprises a transmittance optical substation and a fluorescence optical substation, said drive assembly moving said card through both said transmittance optical substation and said fluorescence optical substation.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein said ledge is mounted to a support means and said system further comprises at least one carriage and slide assembly having a first portion fixed with respect to said support means and a second portion fixed with respect to said drive assembly, said carriage and slide assembly permitting said drive assembly to move relative to said support means without substantial friction, so as to maintain said pressure between said drive belt, said card and said ledge means in the event of tolerance variations in the dimensions of said card.
- 9. The system of claim 1, wherein said ledge means comprises an elongate member extending transversely adjacent to said optical system and defining said card slot, and wherein said drive assembly further comprises a set of rollers supporting said drive belt transversely in a position parallel to said elongate member, said rollers defining a supporting surface for supporting said second edge of said card, said card positioned in and moved along said supporting surface and said card slot as said drive belt moves said card relative to said optical system.
