Claims
- 1. An optical repeater for a submerged optical transmission system comprising:
- a tubular pressure resistant housing;
- a pressure resistant bulkhead at each end secured to the housing;
- each bulkhead having a respective cable sealed in a pressure resistant cable gland secured in the bulkhead; and
- a chassis located inside the housing;
- there being optical feed means connected between the chassis and the cable in one of the bulkheads;
- a resilient helically-coiled self-supporting member having a longitudinal axis and being longitudinally expansible and contractible along said axis by a substantial amount such that a bulkhead can be withdrawn from one end while the optical feed integrity is maintained at the other end, said member defining an open channel which extends along the member and which locates and holds said optical feed means.
- 2. An optical signal repeater for a submerged optical transmission system comprising:
- a tubular pressure resistant housing;
- opto-electronic components in the housing forming a regenerator for regenerating a signal in the system;
- a pressure resistant bulkhead removably secured to the housing, a gland removably secured in the bulkhead, and a tail cable sealed in the gland, there being optical fibres connected between the cable on the one hand and the opto-electronic components on the other hand; and
- a resilient coiled self-supporting carrier carrying the optical fibres such that the gland can be removed from or assembled into the bulkhead, the carrier stretching or closing like a spring during removal and assembly, said carrier having an open channel in which the optical fibres are located.
- 3. An optical signal repeater as claimed in claim 2, wherein said channel has a U-section.
