Claims
- 1. An optical system comprising, in order from the object side,
- a first lens unit having a negative refractive power and a second lens unit having a positive refractive power,
- wherein a graded refractive lens element is disposed in said first lens unit, and
- wherein said graded refractive index lens element has a negative refractive power of surface, a positive refractive power of medium and a negative refractive power as a whole, and has a refractive index distribution profile expressed by the following formula (1) in a direction perpendicular to an optical axis of said optical system and satisfying the following condition (2):
- n(r)=n.sub.0 +.SIGMA.n.sub.i r.sub.i.sup.2i ( 1)
- 0<.nu..sub.1 d (2)
- wherein the reference symbol n.sub.0 represents refractive index of said graded refractive index lens element as measured on the optical axis, the reference symbol r designates distance as measured from the optical axis in the radial direction, the reference symbol n(r) denotes refractive index of said graded refractive index lens element as measured at the distance r from the optical axis, the reference symbol n.sub.1 represents the refractive index distribution coefficient of the 2ith order, and the reference symbol .nu..sub.1d designates a value determined by the following formula when the values of the coefficient of the second order for the d-line, F-line and C-line are represented by n.sub.1d, n.sub.1F and n.sub.1C, respectively: ##EQU1##
- 2. An optical system according to claim 1 wherein said first lens unit is composed of a single lens element.
- 3. An optical system according to claim 2 satisfying the following conditions (4) and (7):
- .phi..sub.S .multidot..phi.M<0 (4)
- 0.2<r.sub.I /f<3 (7)
- wherein the reference symbol r.sub.I represents radius of curvature on the image side surface of said graded refractive index lens element and the reference symbol f designates focal length of said lens system as a whole.
- 4. An optical system according to claim 1 wherein said graded refractive index lens element has a negative meniscus shape convex on the object side.
