- 1. An optical system comprising a plural number of lens elements wherein at least one of said lens elements is designed as a graded refractive index lens element having refractive index distribution profile expressed by the following formula (1) in the direction perpendicular to the optical axis and satisfying the following condition (2):
- n(r)=n.sub.0 +.SIGMA.n.sub.i r.sub.i.sup.2i ( 1)
- 0<.nu..sub.1 d (2)
- wherein the reference symbol n.sub.0 represents refractive index of said graded refractive index lens element as measured on the optical axis, the reference symbol r designates distance as measured from the optical axis in the radial direction, the reference symbol n(r) denotes refractive index of said graded refractive index lens element as measured at the distance r from the optical axis, the reference symbol n.sub.i represents the refractive index distribution coefficient of the 2i'th order, and the reference symbol .nu..sub.1d designates a value determined by the following formula when the values of the coefficient of the second order for the d-line, F-line and C-line are represented by n.sub.1d, n.sub.1F and n.sub.1C respectively: ##EQU1## wherein said optical system comprises a lens unit having a negative refractive power, said graded refractive index lens element is arranged in said lens unit having the negative refractive power, and said graded refractive index lens element has a positive refractive power of surface, a positive refractive power of medium and a positive refractive power as a whole.
