Claims
- 1. A charge pump comprising:
- a) a region of semiconductor material having an input terminal and an output terminal, said output terminal spaced from said input terminal;
- b) said region including compositionally graded semiconductor material between said input and output terminals having an energy band edge of said graded semiconductor material decreasing from said input terminal to said output terminal; and
- c) a light source illuminating said region whereby said light source provides energy to excite charge carriers to an energy level near or above the highest portion of said band edge to create an omnidirectional carrier flow toward said output terminal.
- 2. The charge pump of claim 1 wherein said light source is pulsed and said charge carriers are transferred in packets.
- 3. The charge pump of claim 1 wherein said energy band edge is the lowest conductor band edge.
- 4. The charge pump of claim 1 wherein said energy band edge is essentially monotonically decreasing except for discontinuities.
