Claims
- 1. A method of transferring session context in a wireless communication network comprising:
defining a first wireless coverage area provided by a first base station; establishing a first wireless session context between a subscriber access unit and the first base station; defining a second wireless coverage area provided by a second base station; determining whether the subscriber access unit is concurrently in the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area; and selectively establishing a second wireless session context between the subscriber access unit and the second base station.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first wireless session context and the second wireless session context are operable to provide a communication link between the first base station and the subscriber access unit and between the second base station and the subscriber access unit, respectively.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the second wireless session context is continuous with the first wireless session context.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the continuous session context prevents interruption of the communication link between either of the first base station and the second base station, and the subscriber.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein determining further comprises:
determining a first loading factor indicative of a throughput load at the first base station; and determining a second loading factor indicative of a throughput load at the second base station.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein selectively establishing further comprises comparing the first loading factor with the second loading factor and selectively establishing based on the comparing.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein selectively establishing the second wireless context occurs when the load divergence is greater than a predetermined threshold.
- 8. The method of claim 5 wherein determining the first loading factor and the second loading factor further comprises storing the loading factor in a loading factor history.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein determining further comprises determining overlapping coverage of the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area.
- 10. The method of claim 2 wherein the communication link is via a wireless medium.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the wireless medium is a radio link.
- 12. A system for establishing a wireless communication link comprising:
a first base station connected to a public access network and operable for wireless communication in a wireless network; a second base station connected to the public access network and operable for wireless communication in a wireless network; a subscriber access unit operable for wireless communication with the first base station processor and the second base station processor; and a load manager operable to determine a loading factor indicative of a throughput load, wherein a wireless session context is selectively established from the subscriber access unit to the first base station processor and the second base station processor based on the loading factor.
- 13. The system of claim 12 wherein each of the first wireless session context and the second wireless session context provides a communication link.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein the communication link is continuous.
- 15. The system of claim 12 wherein the first base station has a first wireless coverage area and the second base station has a second wireless coverage area, wherein the subscriber access unit is simultaneously within the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area.
- 16. The system of claim 12 wherein the loading factor is computed when the subscriber access unit is simultaneously within the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area.
- 17. The system of claim 12 further comprising a context selector in communication with the load manager, wherein the context selector is operable to establish the wireless session context from the subscriber access unit to the first base station processor and the second base station processor.
- 18. The system of claim 12 wherein the load manager further includes a loading history including previous loading factors.
- 19. A computer program product including computer program code for transferring session context in a wireless communication network comprising:
computer program code for defining a first wireless coverage area provided by a first base station; computer program code for establishing a first wireless session context between a subscriber access unit and the first base station; computer program code for defining a second wireless coverage area provided by a second base station; computer program code for determining whether the subscriber access unit is concurrently in the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area; and computer program code for selectively establishing a second wireless session context between the subscriber access unit and the second base station.
- 20. A computer data signal including program code for transferring session context in a wireless communication network comprising:
program code for defining a first wireless coverage area provided by a first base station; program code for establishing a first wireless session context between a subscriber access unit and the first base station; program code for defining a second wireless coverage area provided by a second base station; program code for determining whether the subscriber access unit is concurrently in the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area; and program code for selectively establishing a second wireless session context between the subscriber access unit and the second base station.
- 21. A system for establishing a wireless communication link comprising means for defining a first wireless coverage area provided by a first base station;
means for establishing a first wireless session context between a subscriber access unit and the first base station; means for defining a second wireless coverage area provided by a second base station; means for determining whether the subscriber access unit is concurrently in the first wireless coverage area and the second wireless coverage area; and means for selectively establishing a second wireless session context between the subscriber access unit and the second base station.
