Claims
- 1. A nonlinearly optically active monomer species comprising at least two carbon-carbon activated double bonds and a non-centrosymmetric system of pi (.pi.) conjugated bonds bearing at least one electron attracting group on one terminal thereof and at least one electron donor group on the other terminal, wherein the monomer species has the formula (I): ##STR49## wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl or alkylidene radical; R' is a lower acyl or acylidene radical, or R and R' when taken together form a heterocycle having from 5 to 7 atoms; and A comprises said non-centrosymmetric system of .pi. conjugated bonds and wherein Y' is H, CH.sub.3 or Cl.
- 2. The monomer species as defined by claim 1, having the formula (I'): ##STR50## wherein Y' is H, CH.sub.3 or Cl.
- 3. The monomer species as defined by claim 1, wherein A has the formula --L--A'--L'--, in which L and L' are linking moieties and A' comprises said noncentrosymmetric system of .pi. conjugated bonds.
- 4. The monomer species as defined by claim 3, wherein A' is a hyperpolarizable group.
- 5. The monomer species as defined by claim 4, wherein A' has the formula:
- E--Z.sub.1 --X.dbd.Y--Z.sub.2 --N<
- in which X and Y are N, C or CH; Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are unsaturated or aromatic divalent radicals; and E is an electron acceptor group.
- 6. The monomer species as defined by claim 5, in which Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are divalent benzene, pyridine, furan, styrene, alkyne or alkene radicals.
- 7. The monomer species as defined by claim 6, in which E is a nitro or cyano radical.
- 8. The monomer species as defined by claim 4, wherein --Z.sub.1 --X.dbd.Y--Z.sub.2 -- has the formula: ##STR51## in which R'.sub.7 is a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or lower alkyl amino radical, and R".sub.7 is a lower alkyl trifluoromethyl, halo, amido or sulfoxide radical.
