CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims priority to and the benefit of Korean Patent Application Nos. 10-2023-0038984, filed on Mar. 24, 2023, and 10-2023-0061344, filed on May 11, 2023, in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the content of each of which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.

BACKGROUND
1. Field

One or more embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an organic light-emitting device and an apparatus including the organic light-emitting device.

2. Description of the Related Art

Organic light-emitting devices are self-emissive devices that have relatively wide viewing angles, high contrast ratios, short response times, and excellent or suitable characteristics in terms of luminance, driving voltage, and response speed, compared to devices in the art.

An organic light-emitting device may have a structure in which a first electrode is on a substrate, and a hole transport region, an emission layer, an electron transport region, and a second electrode are sequentially formed on the first electrode. Holes provided from the first electrode move toward the emission layer through the hole transport region, and electrons provided from the second electrode move toward the emission layer through the electron transport region. Carriers, such as holes and electrons, recombine in the emission layer to produce excitons. The excitons may transition (e.g., decay) from an excited state to a ground state, thereby generating light.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Reference will now be made in more detail to embodiments, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout the present disclosure, and duplicative descriptions thereof may not be provided for conciseness. In this regard, the embodiments of the present disclosure may have different forms and should not be construed as being limited to the descriptions set forth herein. Accordingly, the embodiments of the present disclosure are merely described, by referring to the drawings, to explain aspects of the present disclosure. As utilized herein, the term “and/or” or “or” may include any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed items. Throughout the disclosure, the expressions such as “at least one of,” “one of,” and “selected from,” when preceding a list of elements, modify the entire list of elements and do not modify the individual elements of the list. For example, “at least one of a, b or c”, “at least one selected from a, b, and c”, “at least one selected from among a to c”, etc., may indicate only a, only b, only c, both (e.g., simultaneously) a and b, both (e.g., simultaneously) a and c, both (e.g., simultaneously) b and c, all of a, b, and c, or variations thereof. The “/” utilized herein may be interpreted as “and” or as “or” depending on the situation.

The term “exciplex host” as utilized herein refers to a host including (e.g., consisting of) a combination of hosts that form an exciplex in an emission layer. For example, a host including (e.g., consisting of) a combination of a first host and a second host may be an exciplex host.

The term “host exciplex” as utilized herein refers to an exciplex generated by an exciplex host.

An exciplex refers to a complex in a short-lived excited state formed between two molecules (e.g., an electron donor and an electron acceptor). The state of such an exciplex may be a charge transfer state or a local-excitation state.

The charge transfer state refers to a state in which electrons do not belong to a specific molecule but are shared between two molecules (e.g., an electron donor and an electron acceptor). On the other hand, the local-excitation state refers to a state where the excited state is localized to one of molecules of a complex rather than being shared between two molecules.

According to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, a light-emitting device may include:

    • a first electrode;
    • a second electrode facing the first electrode; and
    • an interlayer between the first electrode and the second electrode and including an emission layer,
    • wherein the emission layer may include a first host, a second host, a first dopant, and a second dopant,
    • the first dopant may be a metal-containing compound,
    • the second dopant may be a boron-containing compound,
    • the first host and the second host may combine to form a host exciplex,
    • the host exciplex may be in a triplet (T1) state, and
    • the host exciplex in the T1 state may also be in a local-excitation state.

In one or more embodiments, the first electrode may be an anode, the second electrode may be a cathode, and the interlayer may further include a hole transport region between the first electrode and the emission layer and including a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, an electron blocking layer, or any combination thereof.

In one or more embodiments, the first electrode may be an anode, the second electrode may be a cathode, and the interlayer may further include an electron transport region between the second electrode and the emission layer and including a hole blocking layer, an electron transport layer, an electron injection layer, or any combination thereof.

In one or more embodiments, the first host may be a hole-transporting host.

In one or more embodiments, the second host may be an electron-transporting host.

In one or more embodiments, a difference between a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy value of the first host and a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy value of the second host may be at least (e.g., greater than) 0.2 eV.

For example, the difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy value of the first host and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy value of the second host may be expressed by Condition (1):

(HOMO energy value of first host)−(HOMO energy value of second host)>0.2 eV  (1)

For example, in some embodiments, the difference between a HOMO energy value of the first host and a HOMO energy value of the second host may be at least (e.g., greater than) 0.2 eV and less than or equal to a band gap value of the second host.

In one or more embodiments, a difference between a lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy value of the first host and a lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy value of the second host may be at least (e.g., greater than) 0.2 eV.

For example, the difference between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy value of the first host and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy value of the second host may be expressed by Condition (2):

(LUMO energy value of first host)−(LUMO energy value of second host)>0.2 eV  (2)

For example, in some embodiments, the difference between a LUMO energy value of the first host and a LUMO energy value of the second host may be at least (e.g., greater than) 0.2 eV and less than or equal to a band gap value of the first host.

When the LUMOs and HOMOs of the first host, which is a hole-transporting host, and the second host, which is an electron-transporting host, each satisfies the above relationship, the possibility that the hole-transporting host and the electron-transporting host form an exciplex increases.

In one or more embodiments, the host exciplex in the triplet T1 state may be further in a charge transfer state, and the number of host exciplexes in a local-excitation state may be greater than the number of host exciplexes in the charge transfer state. For example, when expressed as a percentage (%), the number of the host exciplexes in the local-excitation state may be 51%, and the number of the host exciplexes in the charge transfer state may be 49%, relative to the total number of host exciplexes. For example, in some embodiments, the number of the host exciplexes in the local-excitation state may be 55%, and the number of the host exciplexes in the charge transfer state may be 45%, relative to the total number of host exciplexes. For example, in some embodiments, the number of the host exciplexes in the local-excitation state may be 60%, and the number of the host exciplexes in the charge transfer state may be 40%, relative to the total host exciplexes.

The host exciplex may be in a singlet (S1) state and/or a T1 state. The host exciplex including (e.g., consisting of) the exciplex hosts in the emission layer of the light-emitting device according to one or more embodiments may be in a T1 state, and the host exciplex in the T1 state may be also in a local-excitation state. Consequently, the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) increases, for example, the RISC rate of triplet excitons speeds up, and thus the lifespan of the light-emitting device is improved. As a result, the host exciplex in the S1 state may relatively increases, and thus the efficiency and lifespan of the light-emitting device are improved.

In some embodiments, the Forster radius may be expressed Condition (3):

    • RF=Förster radius

    • ΦD=Photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of energy transfer molecule (e.g., energy donor molecule)

    • κ2=dipole orientation factor

    • J=Convolution of absorption spectrum of energy acceptor molecule and emission spectrum of energy transfer molecule

    • NA=Avogadro's number

    • n=Refractive index of medium

In the above condition, the energy transfer molecule may be an exciplex host. When the PLQY of the exciplex host is high, the Forster radius increases, and thus the efficiency and lifespan of the light-emitting device may be increased.

ΔEST (difference between energy of host exciplex in S1 state and energy of host exciplex in T1) may be greater than or equal to 0 eV and less than 0.3 eV. Because the difference between the triplet exciplex energy level and the singlet exciplex energy level of the host exciplex is small, the RISC from the triplet exciplex energy level to the singlet exciplex energy level may be facilitated.

In one or more embodiments, even when ΔEST increases beyond the above range, the host exciplex in the T1 state may be also in the local-excitation state, and thus by mixing the charge transfer state of the host exciplex in the S1 state and the local-excitation state of the host exciplex in the T1 state, the spin orbital coupling (SOC) is increased. Accordingly, the RISC speeds up, thereby improving the efficiency and lifespan of the light-emitting device.

In one or more embodiments, a triplet energy value of the exciplex host may be greater than a triplet energy value of the first dopant.

In one or more embodiments, the triplet energy value of the first dopant may be greater than a triplet energy value of the second dopant.

For example, the triplet energy value of the exciplex host, the triplet energy value of the first dopant, and the triplet energy value of the second dopant may satisfy Condition (4):

triplet energy value of exciplex host>triplet energy value of first dopant>triplet energy value of second dopant  (4)

When the triplet energy value of the exciplex host, the triplet energy value of the first dopant, and the triplet energy value of the second dopant satisfy Condition (4), the back energy transfer may be prevented or reduced and the energy transfer may easily occur.

In the light-emitting device according to one or more embodiments, the emission layer may include the first host, the second host, the first dopant, and the second dopant, wherein the first dopant is a metal-containing compound, and the second dopant is a boron-containing compound, and

    • the first host and the second host may combine to form a host exciplex.

As long as the host exciplex is in a T1 state and the host exciplex in the T1 is also in a local-excitation state, the efficiency and lifespan of the light-emitting device according to one or more embodiments should be better than those of a comparable light-emitting device in the related art. In this regard, the first host and the second host are not particularly limited.

In one or more embodiments, the first host may include a compound represented by Formula 1:

As an anode, a Corning 15 Ω/cm2 (1,200 Å) ITO glass substrate was cut to a size of 50 mm×50 mm×0.5 mm, sonicated with isopropyl alcohol and pure water each for 10 minutes, and then cleaned by exposure to ultraviolet rays and ozone for 10 minutes. The cleaned ITO glass substrate was then provided to a vacuum deposition apparatus.

Compound m-MTDATA was vacuum-deposited on the substrate to form a hole injection layer having a thickness of 40 Å, and subsequently, NPB was vacuum-deposited thereon to form a hole transport layer having a thickness of 10 Å.

On the hole transport layer, Compound HT-02 as a first host and Compound ET011 as a second host (i.e., the host combination of Comparative Example 1), Compound 16 as a first dopant, and Compound D-07 as a second dopant were co-deposited at a weight ratio of 64%:25%:10%:1% to form an emission layer having a thickness of 200 Å.

Next, Compound ETL1 was formed on the emission layer to form an electron transport layer having a thickness of 300 Å.

Al was vacuum-deposited on the electron transport layer to a thickness of 1,200 Å (cathode electrode) to form an Al electrode, thereby completing the manufacture of a light-emitting device.
