Claims
- 1. A composition comprising organoborane polyamine complex and polyol, the weight ratio of the polyol to the complex being no greater than about 20:1.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 which is a room temperature liquid solution of the organoborane polyamine complex and the polyol.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polyol has a hydroxyl functionality of 2 to 3.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyether polyol and polyester polyol.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4 wherein the polyol is polyalkylene oxide polyol.
- 6. A composition according to claim 4 wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide polyol, polypropylene oxide polyol, polytetramethylene oxide polyol, ethylene oxide- and propylene oxide-terminated derivatives of these materials, poly-.epsilon.-caprolactone polyol, and blends of the foregoing.
- 7. A composition comprising organoborane polyamine complex and polyol, the polyol being selected from the group consisting of polyether polyol and polyester polyol.
- 8. A room temperature liquid solution comprising:
- (a) a complex of:
- (1) organoborane having the structure: ##STR14## wherein: R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently select from groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and phenyl-containing groups, and
- (2) polyamine; and
- (b) polyol,
- the weight ratio of the polyol to the complex being no greater than about 20:1.
- 9. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 8 wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyether polyol and polyester polyol.
- 10. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 9 wherein the polyol is polyalkylene oxide polyol.
- 11. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 8 wherein the polyamine has the structure H.sub.2 N--R.sup.4 --NH.sub.2 wherein R.sup.4 is a divalent, organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl and alkylaryl groups.
- 12. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 11 wherein the polyamine has the structure ##STR15## wherein x is a whole number greater than or equal to 1, and R.sup.5 is hydrogen or an alkyl group.
- 13. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 8 wherein the polyamine is a polyoxyalkylenepolyamine that is a liquid at room temperature.
- 14. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 8 wherein the polyamine is a polyoxyalkylenepolyamine having a structure selected from the group consisting of: H.sub.2 NR.sup.6 (R.sup.7 O).sub.w --(R.sup.8 O).sub.x --(R.sup.7 O).sub.y --R.sup.6 NH.sub.2 and [H.sub.2 NR.sup.6 --(R.sup.7 O).sub.w ].sub.z --R.sup.9 ; wherein R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are alkylene groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and which may be the same or may be different; R.sup.9 is the residue of a polyol used to prepare the polyoxyalkylenepolyamine; the value of w is .gtoreq.1; the value of x is .gtoreq.0; the value of y is .gtoreq.0; and the value of z is >2.
- 15. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 8 wherein the polyamine comprises the reaction product of diprimary amine-terminated material and one or more materials containing at least two groups reactive with primary amine.
- 16. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 8 wherein the polyamine in the complex is selected from the group consisting of: alkyl polyamine; polyoxyalkylenepolyamine; and the reaction product of a diprimary amine-terminated material and a material having at least two groups reactive with primary amine, wherein the number of primary amine groups in the reaction mixture was greater than the number of groups reactive with primary amine; and further wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of: polyethylene oxide polyol, polypropylene oxide polyol, polytetramethylene oxide polyol, ethylene oxide- and propylene oxide-terminated derivatives of these materials, poly-.epsilon.-caprolactone, and blends of the foregoing.
- 17. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 16 wherein the polyamine has the structure ##STR16## wherein x is a whole number of about 2 to 12, and R.sup.5 is hydrogen or methyl.
- 18. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 17 wherein each R.sup.1 ; R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is the same and is an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms.
- 19. A composition comprising an organoborane polyamine complex and a polyol, the polyamine component of the complex being selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) alkyl polyamine;
- (ii) polyoxyalkylenepolyamine; and
- (iii) the reaction product of diprimary amine-terminated material and one or more materials having at least two groups reactive with primary amine, wherein the number of primary amine groups in the reaction mixture was greater than the number of groups reactive with primary amine.
- 20. A composition comprising an organoborane polyamine complex and a polyol, the composition being essentially free of polymerizable material the polymerization of which can be initiated by organoborane.
- 21. A composition according to claim 20 which is a room temperature liquid solution of the organoborane polyamine complex and the polyol.
- 22. A composition according to claim 20 wherein the polyol has a hydroxyl functionality of 2 to 3.
- 23. A composition according to claim 20 wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyether polyol and polyester polyol.
- 24. A composition according to claim 20 wherein the polyol is polyalkylene oxide polyol.
- 25. A composition according to claim 23 wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene oxide polyol, polypropylene oxide polyol, polytetramethylene oxide polyol, ethylene oxide- and polyene oxide-terminated derivatives of these materials, poly-.epsilon.-caprolactone polyol, and blends of the foregoing.
- 26. A room temperature liquid-solution comprising:
- (a) a complex of:
- (1) organoborane having the structure: ##STR17## wherein: R.sup.1 is an allyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently select from groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and phenyl-containing groups, and
- (2) polyamine; and
- (b) polyol,
- the solution being essentially free of polymerizable material the polymerization of which can be initiated by organoborane.
- 27. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 26 wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of polyether polyol and polyester polyol.
- 28. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 27 wherein the polyol is polyalkylene oxide polyol.
- 29. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 26 wherein the polyamine has the structure H.sub.2 N--R.sup.4 --NH.sub.2 wherein R.sup.4 is a divalent, organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl and alkylaryl groups.
- 30. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 29 wherein the polyamine has the structure ##STR18## wherein x is a whole number greater than or equal to 1, and R.sup.5 is hydrogen or an alkyl group.
- 31. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 26 wherein the polyamine is a polyoxyalkylenepolyamine that is a liquid at room temperature.
- 32. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 26 wherein the polyamine is a polyoxyallylenepolyamine having a structure selected from the group consisting of: H.sub.2 NR.sup.6 (R.sup.7 O).sub.w --(R.sup.8 O).sub.x (R.sup.7 O).sub.y --R.sup.6 NH.sub.2 and [H.sub.2 NR.sup.6 --(R.sup.7 O).sub.w ].sub.z --R.sup.9 ; wherein R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are alkylene groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and which may be the same or may be different; R.sup.9 is the residue of a polyol used to prepare the polyoxyalkylenepolyamine; the value of w is .gtoreq.1; the value of x is .gtoreq.0; the value of y is .gtoreq.0; and the value of z is >2.
- 33. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 26 wherein the polyamine comprises the reaction product of diprimary amine-terminated material and one or more materials containing at least two groups reactive with primary amine.
- 34. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 26 wherein the polyamine in the complex is selected from the group consisting of: alkyl polyamine; polyoxyalkylenepolyamine; and the reaction product of a diprimary amine-terminated material and a material having at least two groups reactive with primary amine, wherein the number of primary amine groups in the reaction mixture was greater than the number of groups reactive with primary amine; and further wherein the polyol is selected from the group consisting of: polyethylene oxide polyol, polypropylene oxide polyol, polytetramethylene oxide polyol, ethylene oxide- and propylene oxide-terminated derivatives of these materials, poly-.epsilon.-caprolactone, and blends of the foregoing.
- 35. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 34 wherein the polyamine has the structure ##STR19## wherein x is a whole number of about 2 to 12, and R.sup.5 is hydrogen or methyl.
- 36. A room temperature liquid solution according to claim 35 wherein each R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 is the same and is an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms.
- 37. A composition comprising an organoborane polyamine complex and a polyurethane formation catalyst.
