Claims
- 1. A catalyst composition for the ortho-alkylation of a phenol consisting of a calcination residue derived from heating at a temperature sufficient to produce calcination , said temperature being between 400.degree. and 460.degree. C., a magnesium-containing material selected from the group consisting of magnesium carbonate, basic magnesium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide and mixtures of any of the foregoing, in the presence of a vaporized ortho-alkylation feed mixture comprising a phenolic compound and an alkyl alcohol, said heating being carried out in situ in an ortho-alkylation reactor.
- 2. A catalyst composition according to claim 1, which includes a polymeric binder.
- 3. A catalyst composition according to claim 2, in which the polymeric binder is a polyphenylene ether resin.
- 4. A catalyst composition according to claim 3, in which the polyphenylene oxide resin is poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether).
- 5. A catalyst composition according to claim 1, in which the ortho-alkylation feed mixture comprises o-cresol, phenol and methanol.
