Claims
- 1. An oscillating spindle sander comprising;
- a cabinet having a work table with a substantially horizontal upper surface and an opening extending therethrough;
- an upper and a lower bearing affixed to the cabinet and defining a vertical axis aligned with the cabinet opening;
- a rotary spindle pivotably supported by the upper and lower bearings and oscillatable in a vertical direction relative to the cabinet;
- a drive motor operatively connected to the rotary spindle for rotating and simultaneously axially oscillating the spindle relative to the cabinet; and
- a cylindrical sanding drum attached to said rotary spindle between an upper and a lower washer, said lower washer having a plurality of radial fins which function as a centrifugal fan producing an air flow away from said spindle to expel sanding dust from the region of spindle located between the upper bearing and the lower washer.
- 2. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 1 wherein said lower washer is affixed to the spindle and provided with an upper surface and an opposed lower surface having said plurality of radial fins projecting downward therefrom.
- 3. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 1 further comprising:
- a work table having a substantially horizontal upper surface and an opening extending therethrough, said rotary spindle extending through said opening in said work table upper surface; and
- a dust collection manifold cooperating with the work table and oriented below the work table upper surface surrounding the rotary spindle and work table opening, wherein said lower washer oscillates between the dust collection manifold and the work table horizontal upper surface.
- 4. An oscillating spindle sander comprising:
- a cabinet having a work table with a substantially horizontal upper surface and an opening extending therethrough;
- an upper and a lower bearing affixed to the cabinet and defining a vertical axis aligned with the cabinet opening, a rotary spindle cooperating with the upper and lower bearings, the rotary spindle being oriented normal to said work table upper surface and having an external portion extending upwardly from the table through said opening;
- a sanding drum mounted to the rotary spindle external portion;
- a drive motor operatively connected to the rotary spindle for rotating and simultaneously axially oscillating the sanding drum relative to the work table;
- a dust exhaust manifold mounted below the work table upper surface, surrounding the rotary spindle and work table opening, and provided with an outlet for sanding dust; and
- a centrifugal fan cooperating with and rotated by the rotary spindle, said centrifugal fan located between the work table upper surface and the upper bearing within the dust exhaust manifold to evacuate air and entrained sanding dust away from a region of the rotary spindle located between the upper bearing and the lower washer.
- 5. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 4 wherein said centrifugal fan is fixably secured to the rotary spindle to axially oscillate therewith.
- 6. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 5 wherein said centrifugal fan cooperates with the sanding drum to mount the sanding drum to the rotary spindle.
- 7. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 4 wherein said dust exhaust manifold is provided with an outlet port adapted to cooperate with a remote vacuum collection system.
- 8. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 4 wherein said centrifugal fan is provided with a plurality of straight radially extending fins.
- 9. An oscillating spindle sander comprising:
- a cabinet having a substantially horizontal work table and an internal cavity located below the work table, said work table having an upper surface with an opening formed therethrough extending into the internal cavity;
- an upper and a lower bearing affixed to the cabinet and defining a vertical axis aligned with the cabinet opening;
- a spindle oriented normal to the work table and mounted to the cabinet by the upper and lower bearings facilitating free rotation and limited axial oscillation about a central spindle axis, the spindle having an external portion extending from the work table through the table opening and an internal portion extending into the work table internal cavity, the external portion provided with a fastener for mounting a sanding drum thereon;
- a sanding drum mounted to the rotary spindle external portion;
- an electric motor mounted within the cabinet internal cavity and cooperating with the spindle to cause the spindle to rotate;
- a cam and follower cooperating with the spindle to axially drive the spindle upward during the upward portion of the spindle's axial oscillation, one of the cam and follower axially oscillating with the spindle and the other of the cam and follower located at a fixed axial position, the cam having an annular generally sinusoidal face surface extending about the spindle axis for rotatably cooperating with the follower; and
- a spring resiliently biasing the follower and cam into engagement with one another, thereby causing the follower to maintain contact with the cam face surface to axially oscillate the spindle relative to the horizontal work table as the spindle rotates
- 10. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 9 wherein said centrifugal fan is fixably secured to the rotary spindle to axially oscillate therewith.
- 11. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 10 wherein said centrifugal fan cooperates with the sanding drum to mount the sanding drum to the rotary spindle.
- 12. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 9 wherein said dust exhaust manifold is provided with an outlet port adapted to cooperate with a remote vacuum collection system.
- 13. The oscillating spindle sander of claim 9 wherein said centrifugal fan is provided with a plurality of straight radially extending fins.
