Claims
- 1. A fluid-imbibing delivery device for dispensing a first active agent to a fluid environment of use over a predetermined prolonged period of time and dispensing a second active agent to the fluid environment after an initial delayed period of time, the device comprising:
- (a) a housing comprising at least a first wall section and a second wall section, the first and second wall section (as seen in FIG. 1) being in slidably telescoping arrangement with each other, the first wall section having an open end adapted to fit within the fluid environment;
- (b) a first active agent delivery chamber within a first portion of the housing defined by the first wall section, the first active agent delivery chamber comprising
- (i) at least one first active agent formulation,
- (ii) a first expansion means, and
- (iii) an exit means;
- (c) a second active agent delivery chamber within a second portion of the housing defined by the first wall section, the second active agent delivery chamber having an open end defined by the open end of the first wall section and comprising at least one second active agent formulation; and
- (d) an expansion chamber within a portion of the housing defined by the second wall section, the expansion chamber comprising
- (i) a second expansion means for separating apart the first and second wall sections, and
- (ii) a push plate adjacent the open end of the first wall section and the second active agent delivery chamber.
- 2. A delivery device according to claim 1 which further comprises a partition layer between the first active agent formulation and the first expansion means.
- 3. A delivery device according to claim 1 wherein the first wall section and the second wall section is each comprised of a semipermeable composition.
- 4. A delivery device according to claim 3 which further comprises an impermeable wall within the second active agent delivery chamber and adjacent the walls of the first wall section.
- 5. A deliver device according to claim 1 wherein each of the first and second active agent formulations independently comprises a liquid, a solid, a semisolid, a thermosensitive composition, or a plurality of dosage forms.
- 6. A delivery device according to claim 1 wherein the first active agent formulation and second active agent formulation comprise the same active agent.
- 7. A delivery device according to claim 1 wherein the first active agent formulation and second active agent formulation comprise different active agents.
- 8. A method for delivering a first active agent to a fluid environment of use over a predetermined prolonged period of time and delaying the initial delivery of a second active agent to the fluid environment of use for an initial delayed period of time, the method comprising:
- 1) placing a delivery device into the environment of use, the delivery device comprising:
- (a) a housing comprising at least a first wall section and a second wall section, the first and second wall section (as seen in FIG. 1) being in slidably telescoping arrangement with each other, the first wall section having an open end adapted to fit within the second wall section, which housing maintains it integrity in the fluid environment;
- (b) a first active agent delivery chamber within a first portion of the housing defined by the first wall section, the first active agent delivery chamber comprising
- (i) at least one first active agent formulation,
- (ii) a first expansion means, and
- (iii) an exit means;
- (i) a second expansion means, and
- (ii) a push plate adjacent the open end of the first wall section and the second active agent delivery chamber;
- 2) allowing fluid to be imbibed through at least a portion of the first wall section of the housing of the delivery device for causing the first expansion means to expand and exert pressure on the first active agent formulation, delivering the first agent formulation into the environment through the exit means for the predetermined prolonged period of time; and
- 3) allowing fluid to be imbibed through at least a portion of the second wall section of the housing of the delivery device for causing the second expansion means to expand and exert pressure on the slidably connected first and second wall sections to push apart and separate the first and second wall sections, delivering the second active agent formulation to the environment after a delayed period of time.
- 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the dispensing device further comprises a partition layer between the first active agent formulation and the first expansion means.
- 10. A method according to claim 8 wherein the first wall section and the second wall section is each comprised of a semipermeable composition.
- 11. A method according to claim 10 which further comprises an impermeable wall within the second active agent delivery chamber and adjacent the walls of the first wall section.
- 12. A method device according to claim 8 wherein each of the first and second active agent formulations independently comprises a liquid, a solid, a semisolid, a thermosensitive composition, or a plurality of dosage forms.
- 13. A method according to claim 8 wherein the first active agent formulation and second active agent formulation comprise the same active agent.
- 14. A method according to claim 8 wherein the first active agent formulation and second active agent formulation comprise different active agents.
