Genus and species: Osteospermum ecklonis Norl.
Variety denomination: ‘KLEOE09175’.
BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
The present invention comprises a new and distinct variety of Osteospermum, botanically known as Osteospermum ecklonis Norl., and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘KLEOE09175’. The new variety was discovered as a seedling resulting from a cross conducted in August 2006 in Stuttgart, Germany. The female parent was the Osteospermum plant named ‘Astra Pink Yellow’ (unpatented), and the male parent was a proprietary Osteospermum plant named ‘C101’ (unpatented). A single plant selection was subsequently chosen for further evaluation and for asexual propagation.
The new variety was first propagated via vegetative cuttings in May 2007 in Stuttgart, Germany and has been asexually reproduced repeatedly by vegetative cuttings in Stuttgart, Germany for approximately 10 generations. The present invention has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive asexual propagations via vegetative cuttings.
Plant Breeder's Rights for this variety have not been applied for. ‘KLEOE09175’ has not been made publicly available or sold more than one year prior to the filing date of this application.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following are the most outstanding and distinguishing characteristics of the new variety when grown under normal horticultural practices in Stuttgart, Germany.
- 1. Bicolor amethyst copper flowers;
- 2. Round petals;
- 3. Very tolerant to various weather conditions;
- 4. A very early flowering time; and
- 5. A semi-upright growth habit.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
This new Osteospermum plant is illustrated by the accompanying photograph which shows a close-up of the flower of the plant. The colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures. The photograph was taken in Summer 2009 of a 7-month-old plant in the field in Stuttgart, Germany, under conditions which approximate those generally used in commercial practice.
DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW VARIETY
The following detailed descriptions set forth the distinctive characteristics of ‘KLEOE09175’. The data which define these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out in Stuttgart, Germany. The plant history was taken in Summer 2009 on 7-month-old plants which were potted at 4 weeks in 12 centimeter containers and then planted in the ground in calendar week 20. The plants were pinched once at 6 weeks. Color readings were taken under natural light. Color references are primarily to The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London (R.H.S.), Fifth Edition (2007).
