Claims
- 1. In an outboard motor construction for use when the motor is suspended from an associated watercraft at a level below an operator in the watercraft, said outboard motor having a power head containing an internal combustion engine and a surrounding outer cowling and a drive shaft housing depending from said power head, clamping bracket means positioned beneath said power head for affixing said outboard motor to an outrigger of an associated watercraft so that said power head lies below the upper end ge of the transom of the watercraft, the improvement comprising said outer cowling having an inclined portion formed from a separate piece of cowling and extending upwardly and rearwardly to form a face that may be seen by the operator from above, and an opening herein, a recoil starter for said engine located within said cowling a starter handle accessible from said inclined portion and connected to one end of a starter rope extending through said opening, and said starter rope being connected at its other end to said recoil starter, and guide means for said starter rope for defining a path of movement of the starter rope that is perpendicular to the included portion of the cowling and generally in line with the operator and angularly disposed to said drive shaft housing.
- 2. In an outboard motor construction as set forth in claim 1 wherein the guide means comprises a guiding member fixed relative to a portion of the cowling that does not define the inclined surface.
- 3. In an outboard motor construction as set forth in claim 1 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion, a cover portion and the inclined portion as separate components, the inclined portion being affixed to one of the other portions.
- 4. In an outboard motor construction as set forth in claim 3 wherein the inclined portion is hingedly connected to the portion which supports it.
- 5. In an outboard motor construction as set forth in claim 1 further including a plurality of instruments carried by the inclined portion for indicating the condition of the engine.
- 6. In an outboard motor construction as set forth in claim 1 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion and a top cover portion formed from a synthetic resin and further including support means affixed to one of said cowling portions, retainer means affixed to said support means, and latching means affixed to the other of the the portions and cooperable with the retainer means for locking the cowling portions together.
- 7. In an outboard motor construction as set forth claim 2 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion and a top cover portion formed from a synthetic resin and further including support means affixed to one of said cowling portions, retainer means affixed to said support means, and latching means affixed to the other of the cowling portions and cooperable with the retainer means for locking the cowling portions together.
- 8. In an outboard motor construction as set forth claim 1 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion and a top cover portion formed from a synthetic resin and further including support means affixed to one of said cowling portions, retainer means affixed to said support means, and latching means affixed to the other of the cowling portions and cooperable with the retainer means for locking the cowling portions together.
- 9. In an outboard motor construction as set forth claim 3 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion and a top cover portion formed from a synthetic resin and further including support means affixed to one of said cowling portions, retainer means affixed to said support means, and latching means affixed to the other of the cowling portions and cooperable with the retainer means for locking the cowling portions together.
- 10. In an outboard motor construction as set forth claim 4 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion and a top cover portion formed from a synthetic resin and further including support means affixed to one of said cowling portions, retainer means affixed to said support means, and latching means affixed to the other of the cowling portions and cooperable with the retainer means for locking the cowling portions together.
- 11. In an outboard motor construction as set forth claim 5 wherein the outer cowling comprises a tray portion and a top cover portion formed from a synthetic resin and further including support means affixed to one of said cowling portions, retainer means affixed to said support means, and latching means affixed to the other of the cowling portions and cooperable with the retainer means for locking the cowling portions together.
