Claims
- 1. An outside diameter finishing tool comprising:
- a sleeve having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being formed by disposing abrasive material onto a generally cylindrical rod, the rod being inserted in a shell which circumferentially surrounds the rod and is spaced therefrom to define an annular space, the annular space being filled with an epoxy to retain the abrasive material, and the rod being removed to expose the abrasive material.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the sleeve has a longitudinal slot through the tool to allow for expansion and contraction of the tool to radially adjust the inner surface.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein the abrasive material is disposed by electroforming.
- 4. The device of claim 1 wherein the abrasive material is disposed by sintering.
- 5. The device of claim 1 wherein the abrasive material is disposed by metal-bonding.
- 6. A process for manufacturing a tool for finishing the outside diameter of a workpiece comprising the steps of:
- a) providing a generally cylindrical rod;
- b) forming a coat of abrasive material about a portion of the rod;
- c) placing a shell around the abrasive coat, the shell having an inner surface and an outer surface, and defining an annular space between the abrasive coat and the inner surface of the shell;
- d) filling the annular space with an epoxy material;
- e) curing the epoxy material to secure the abrasive coat within the shell; and
- f) removing the rod to expose the abrasive coat.
- 7. The process of claim 6 further including machining a longitudinal slot through the tool.
- 8. The process of claim 6 further including the steps of machining the outer surface of the shell frustaconical.
- 9. The process of claim 6 wherein the abrasive material is formed by electroforming.
- 10. The process of claim 6 wherein the abrasive material is formed by sintering.
- 11. The process of claim 6 wherein the abrasive material is formed by metal-bonding.
- 12. The process of claim 6 wherein the cylindrical rod is a shaft having a central portion with a constant diameter and having two ends, and an outwardly tapered intermediate section at each end, and another constant diameter end section at each outwardly tapered intermediate section.
- 13. The process of claim 6 wherein the abrasive material is a superabrasive.
- 14. A tool for finishing the outer diameter of a workpiece by the process described in claim 6.
- 15. A tool for finishing the outer diameter of a workpiece comprising:
- an outer shell having an outside surface and an inside surface; and
- an inner annular abrasive layer being disposed within the shell, the inner layer defining a cavity having at least one open end for receiving the workpiece to be finished; and means for holding either of said tool and workpiece, said holding means being adapted to guide said held tool or workpiece into more precise alignment with the other of said tool or workpiece,
- wherein said holding means is a gimbal that permits pivotal and sliding movement of said held tool or workpiece with respect to the other of said tool or workpiece.
- 16. A precision surface finishing tool for uniform micron-tolerance polishing of an outer diameter of a workpiece comprising:
- an outer shell having an outside surface and an inside surface;
- an inner annular abrasive layer fixedly secured to the inside surface of the shell, the inner layer defining a cavity having at least one open end for receiving the workpiece to be finished;
- wherein the tool has a slot therethrough to allow for expansion and contraction of the tool to radially adjust the inner layer of the tool.
