Claims
- 1. A method for controlling engine operation for efficient operation, the engine having a first and second group of cylinders, each of said groups having at least one cylinder, the method comprising:
operating the engine in at least two modes, with a first mode including operating both the first and second group of cylinders with injected fuel and inducted air, and a second mode including operating the first group of cylinders with injected fuel and inducted air and the second group with substantially no injected fuel and inducted air; during said second mode of operation, determining a desired air amount, and adjusting an actuator command to provide said desired air amount, taking into account excess oxygen in a recirculated exhaust gas being inducted into the engine.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said actuator is a fuel injection amount.
- 3. The method recited in claim 1 wherein said actuator is a throttle position.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1 wherein engine is a multiple bank engine, and said first group includes a first bank and said second group includes a second bank.
- 5. The method recited in claim 1 wherein engine is a multiple V-type engine.
- 6. The method recited in claim 1wherein engine is a multiple V-8 engine, with said first group including 4 cylinders of a first bank of said engine and said second group including 4 cylinders of a second bank of said engine.
- 7. The method recited in claim 1 wherein engine is coupled to an emission control device that stores NOx when operating lean and reduces stored NOx when operating rich.
