Claims
- 1. An oxazole carboxamide of the formula Ia or Ib ##STR28## where X is oxygen
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen; halogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl which can carry from one to five halogen atoms and/or one or two of the following: C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkythio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkythio or cyano; benzyl which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkythio, halogen, cyano or nitro; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl which can carry from one to three of the following: halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxy and/or one phenyl which in turn can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, halogen, cyano or nitro; C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl which can carry from one to three of the following: halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxy and/or one phenyl which in turn can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, halogen, cyano or nitro; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; phenoxy or phenylthio, which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, halogen, cyano or nitro;
- R.sup.2 is formyl, 4,5-dihydro-2-oxazolyl or --COYR.sup.5 ;
- Y is oxygen or sulfur;
- R.sup.5 is hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl which can carry from one to five halogen atoms or hydroxyl groups and/or one of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, cyano, trimethylsilyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylamino, di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylamino, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 -cycloalkylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylsulfinyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylsulfonyl, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxycarbonyl, di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylaminocarbonyl, di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxyphosphoryl, alkaneiminoxy, thienyl, furyl, tetrahydrofuryl, phthalimido, pyridyl, benzyloxy or benzoyl, it being possible for the cyclic radicals in turn to carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxy or halogen; benzyl which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -haloalkyl, halogen, nitro and cyano; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl; phenyl, which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxycarbonyl, halogen, nitro and cyano; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -alkenyl, C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkenyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -alkynyl, it being possible for these radicals to carry one of the following: hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, halogen or a phenyl ring which in turn can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, halogen, nitro and cyano; a 5- to 6-membered heterocyclic radical containing one or two hetero atoms selected form the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen or a benzotriazolyl radical; phthalimido; tetrahydrophthalimido; succinimido; maleimido; one equivalent of a cation from the group comprising the alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, manganese, copper, iron ammonium and substituted ammonium; --N.dbd.CR.sup.6 R.sup.7 ; wherein R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are independently hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl; phenyl or furyl, or together form a methylene chain --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --with m=4 to 7;
- R.sup.3 is hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl which can carry from one to three of the following: hydroxyl, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkylamino; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, halogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl;
- R.sup.4 is hydroxyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino, halogen, C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl or phenyl which in turn can carry from one to three of the following: halogen, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio; C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, halogen, nitro or cyano; C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, which can be substituted from once to three times by halogen and/or once by phenyl which in turn can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, halogen, cyano or nitro; a 5- to 6-membered heterocyclic radical which contains one or two hetero atoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen, and which can carry from one to three of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or halogen; phenyl which can carry from one to four of the following: C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkylthio, halogen, nitro, cyano, formyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkanoyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkanoyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxycarbonyl.
- 2. An oxazalecarboxamide of the formula Ia or Ib as set forth in claim 1, where the substituents have the following meanings:
- R.sup.1 is hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkoxy;
- C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -haloalkythio;
- R.sup.2 is --COYR.sup.5 ;
- R.sup.5 is hydrogen; phthalimido; succinimido; maleimido or --N.dbd.R.sup.6 R.sup.7
- wherein
- R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are independently hydrogen; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl or together form a methylene chain --(CH.sub.2).sub.m -- with m=4 to 7;
- R.sup.3 is hydrogen and
- R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl.
- 3. A herbicidal composition containing, in addition to inert additives, an effective amount of at least one oxazole carboxamide of the formula Ia' or Ib' ##STR29## where the substituents have the meaning given in claim 1, R.sup.2 is CO.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 and R.sup.3 is hydrogen.
- 4. A compound of the formula ##STR30## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, and Y have the meaning set forth in claim 1.
- 5. A compound of the formula disclosed in claim 4, wherein R.sup.1 is methyl, R.sup.3 is H, R.sup.4 is tert.-butyl, R.sup.5 is H and Y is O.
- 6. A compound of the formula disclosed in claim 4, wherein R.sup.1 is methyl, R.sup.3 is H, R.sup.4 is tert.-butyl, R.sup.5 is --N.dbd.CH(CH.sub.3).sub.2 and Y is O.
- 7. A compound of the formula disclosed in claim 4, wherein R.sup.1 is methoxy, R.sup.3 is hydrogen, R.sup.4 cyclo-propyl, R.sup.5 is --N.dbd.C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 and Y is O.
- 8. A compound of the formula disclosed in claim 4, wherein R.sup.1 is methoxy, R.sup.3 is hydrogen, R.sup.4 is tert.-butyl, R.sup.5 is --N.dbd.C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 and Y is O.
- 9. A process for combatting unwanted plant growth, wherein the unwanted plants and/or the area to be kept free from unwanted plant growth is treated with a herbicidally effective amount of a compound as defined in claim 5.
- 10. A process for combating unwanted plant growth, wherein the unwanted plants and/or the area to be kept free from unwanted plant growth is treated with a herbicidally effective amount of a compound as defined in claim 6.
- 11. A process for combatting unwanted plant growth, wherein the unwanted plants and/or the area to be kept free from unwanted plant growth is treated with a herbicidally effective amount of a compound as defined in claim 7.
- 12. A process for combatting unwanted plant growth, wherein the unwanted plants and/or the area to be kept free from plant growth is treated with a herbicidally effective amount of a compound as defined in claim 8.
- 13. A process for combatting unwanted plant growth, wherein the unwanted plants and/or the area to be kept free from unwanted plant growth is treated with a herbicidally effective amount of a compound of the formula ##STR31## wherein R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, R.sup.3 is hydrogen, R.sup.4 is tert.-butyl, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or CH.sub.2 C.tbd.H and Y is O.
