Claims
- 1. A process for converting a feedstock comprising methane and/or natural gas to higher order hydrocarbons comprising contacting said feedstock with a catalyst in the presence of an oxygen source under reaction conditions for an effective period of time to form said higher order hydrocarbons, said catalyst being represented by the formula

- wherein
- A is an alkalil or alkaline earth metal;
- M is V, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or a mixture of two or more thereof;
- D is Zr, Ti, Hf, Ce, Th, Pr, Nb, Ta, W, Re or a mixture of two or more thereof;
- E is Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Y, La, Yb, Sm, Gd, Nd, Sc, V, Bi, Ce, Pr, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu or a mixture of two or more thereof;

- y is the number of oxygens needed to fulfill the valence requirements of E; and
- z is a number in the range of about 10 to about 100.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the contacting of said feedstock and said oxygen source with said catalyst results in the formation of an intermediate product, said process further comprising pyrolyzing said intermediate product.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the pyrolysis of said intermediate product is conducted in the pyrolysis zone of a reactor, the average residence time of gaseous materials in said pyrolysis zone being in the range of about 0.01 to about 0.5 seconds.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein the pyrolysis of said intermediate product is conducted in the pyrolysis zone of a reactor, the ratio of the volume of said catalyst to the volume of said pyrolysis zone being at least about 2:1.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the mole ratio of oxygen in said oxygen source to methane in said feedstock is in the range of about 0.1 to less than about one mole of oxygen per mole of methane.
- 6. The process of claim 1 conducted at a temperature of at least about 900.degree. C.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the average contact time between said feedstock and said catalyst is the range of about 0.001 to about 0.2 seconds.
- 8. The process of claim 1 conducted at a pressure up to about 5 atmospheres.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein said feedstock comprises methane.
