Claims
- 1. A catalyst composition of the formula
- A.sub.a E.sub.c Mo.sub.e Sb.sub.f O.sub.x
- wherein A is at least one element selected from the group consisting of titanium in combination with at least one element selected from the group consisting of zirconium, niobium and tantalum;
- E is a member selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, magnesium, aluminum, or nickel; and
- wherein
- a is a number from 0.01 to 6;
- c is a number from 0 to 0.2;
- e and f are numbers from 1 to 9;
- x is a number which satisfies the valence requirements of the other elements present; and
- wherein at least some of the molybdenum in the catalyst is maintained at a valence state below +6; and
- wherein said catalyst optionally contains one or more elements selected from the group consisting of lithium, silver, cerium, cadmium, cobalt, arsenic, silicon, zinc, germanium, ruthenium, bismuth, platinum, and uranium.
- 2. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein A is titanium and niobium.
- 3. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein A is titanium and zirconium.
- 4. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein E is added to the catalyst as molybdenum metal or hydrazine hydrate.
- 5. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the catalyst optionally contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of cadmium, cobalt, arsenic, lithium and cerium.
- 6. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein c is greater than zero.
- 7. The catalyst of claim 1 wherein the catalyst is SbMo.sub.3 Ti.sub.0.6 Nb.sub.0.1 O.sub.x +Mo.degree..sub.0.06.
- 8. A catalyst composition of the formula
- A.sub.a E.sub.c Ti.sub.d Mo.sub.e Sb.sub.f O.sub.x
- wherein
- A is at least one element selected from the group consisting of niobium, zirconiim, and tantalum;
- E is at least one element selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, magnesium, aluminum or nickel;
- wherein
- a and d are numbers from 0.01 to 3;
- c is a number from 0 to 0.2;
- e and f are numbers from 1 to 9;
- x is a number which satisfies the valence requirements of the other elements present; and
- wherein at least some of the molybdenum in the catalyst is maintained at a valence state below +6.
- 9. The catalyst of claim 8 wherein a mixture of molybdenum trioxide and ammonium heptamolybdate is employed in the preparation of the catalyst.
- 10. The catalyst of claim 8 wherein the catalyst is prepared by refluxing an aqueous mixture of ammonium heptamolybdate, molybdenum trioxide and a reducing agent.
- 11. The catalyst of claim 8 wherein c is greater than zero.
- 12. A catalyst composition of the formula
- A.sub.a D.sub.b E.sub.c Ti.sub.d Mo.sub.e Sb.sub.f O.sub.x
- wherein
- A is at least one element selected from the group consisting of niobium, zirconium, and tantalum;
- D is at least one element selected from the group consisting of cadmium, cobalt, arsenic, lithium and cerium;
- E is a member selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten, magnesium, or aluminum;
- wherein
- a is 0.01 to 3;
- b is 0 to 1;
- c is greater than 0 to 0.2;
- d is greater than 0 to 3;
- e and f are numbers from 1 to 9;
- x is a number which satisfies the valence requirements of the other elements present; and
- wherein at least some of the molybdenum in the catalyst is maintained at a valence state below +6.
- 13. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein d is a number from 0.01 to 3.
- 14. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein b is 0.01 to 0.5.
- 15. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein a and d are numbers from 0.01 to 1.0 and b is zero.
- 16. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein E is added to the catalyst as molybdenum metal.
- 17. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein A is niobium.
- 18. The catalyst of claim 12 wherein A is zirconium.
- 19. The catalyst of claim 16 wherein c is 0.001 to 0.2 and e and f are numbers from 1.0 to 8.0.
- 20. The catalyst of claim 18 described by the formula SbMo.sub.3 Ti.sub.0.6 Zr.sub.0.1 O.sub.x +Mo.sup.o.sub. 0.06.
