Claims
- 1. A polycrystalline ceramic body consisting essentially of a composition of Si.sub.3 N.sub.4, SiO.sub.2 and Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, said composition lying within a triangular region of the Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 -SiO.sub.2 -Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 ternary composition diagram bounded by lines joining the points Si.sub.3 N.sub.4, Y.sub.2 O.sub.3.2SiO.sub.2, 10Y.sub.2 O.sub.3.9SiO.sub.2.Si.sub.3 N.sub.4, and Si.sub.3 N.sub.4.Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, said compositions having from about 2 to about 4 weight percent SiO.sub.2 and up to about 13 weight percent Y.sub.2 O.sub.3.
- 2. The body of claim 1 wherein Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 is present in the amount of about 11 to 13 weight percent.
- 3. The body of claim 2 wherein SiO.sub.2 is present in the amount of at least 3 weight percent.
- 4. The body of claim 1 wherein cation impurities are below 0.1 weight percent.
