- pipe means for feeding air under pressure to a first pressure-regulating air valve,
- said first air valve being adapted to provide substantially constant air pressure downstream of said valve,
- a second air valve located downstream of said first air valve,
- said second air valve being adapted to feed air to said at least one spray nozzle at a predetermined pressure,
- such that both said water and air emanating from said valves, respectively, are fed under predetermined pressures to said same nozzle to produce an air-liquid droplet spray mixture in said hearth,
- a temperature-responsive control device for continually and automatically sensing the temperature in said hearth,
- and means coupling said temperature-responsive control device to either the second water valve or the second air valve for actuating said valve to vary the ratio of liquid water to air fed to said spray nozzle by varying the pressure of one relative to the other in response to the difference in temperature between the temperature sensed and the desired roasting temperature,

- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said temperature-responsive control device is coupled to said second water valve.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said temperature-responsive control device as coupled to said second air valve.
- 4. In a vertically disposed multi-hearth roasting furnace in which material to be roasted is fed through a series of intercommunicating roasting hearths starting from the top hearth and passing through the bottom hearth thereof, a system of controlling the desired roasting temperature in one or more roasting hearths of said furnace which comprises,
- at least one spray nozzle directed into at least one roasting hearth of said furnace for feeding a spray mixture of liquid water droplets and air to the interior of said hearth,
- pipe means for feeding water under pressure to a first pressure-regulating water valve,
- said first water valve being adapted to provide water at substantially constant pressure downstream of said valve,
- a second water valve located downstream of said first water valve,
- said second water valve being adjustably adapted to feed water to said at least one spray nozzle at a predetermined pressure,

- whereby to control the roasting temperature at substantially the desired temperature.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said temperature-responsive control device is coupled to said second water valve.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said temperature-responsive control device is coupled to said second air valve.
- 7. An apparatus for roasting a sulfur-containing material, such as metal sulfide concentrates, said apparatus characterized by having at least one roasting zone comprising a hearth for supporting a bed of a metal sulfide concentrate which comprises,
- at least one spray means directed into said hearth for feeding a mixture of the fluids water and air to said zone,
- pipe means including a pressure regulating valve for feeding water under pressure to said spray means,
- pipe means including a pressure regulating valve for feeding air under pressure with said water to said same spray means,
- and valve control means cooperably associated with at least one of said pressure regulating valves for varying the ratio of the fluids fed together to said spray means by varying the pressure of one of said fluids relative to the other,
- said valve control means including a temperature-responsive control means automatically responsive to the change in temperature in said hearth for actuating said at least one of said pressure regulating valves whereby to vary the pressure of one fluid relative to the other and thus vary the ratio of the fluids fed together to said spray means in accordance with a predetermined temperature to be maintained in said hearth.
