Claims
- 1. A system for providing a fluctuating flow of a gas to a reactor, said system comprising:a) a gas source; b) at least one reactant; c) two or more reactors arranged in parallel; and d) means for alternating said flow of a gas from said source between said reactors without adjusting the flow of said at least one reactant in such a manner that while one or more, but not all reactors receive a flow of said gas in a relatively high amount, the remaining reactor or reactors receive a flow of said gas in a relatively low amount.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein said gas source is oxygen.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein said reactor is a fixed-bed reactor or a fluidized-bed reactor.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein said gas in a relatively low amount is greater than or equal to 0% enrichment, and less than said gas in a relatively high amount.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein the relatively low amount of oxygen is 0% enrichment.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein said gas in a relatively high amount is less than or equal to 9% enrichment, and is greater than said gas in a relatively low amount.
- 7. The system of claim 6 wherein the relatively high amount of oxygen is 1-3% enrichment, and is greater than the relatively low amount.
- 8. The system of claim 1 wherein said gas source is added in such a manner so as to increase the average yield of said oxidation.
- 9. The system of claim 1 wherein said means for alternating said gas comprises:a) adding said gas to said reaction such that a relatively high yield is attained; b) reducing said supply of said gas until such a time immediately before said relatively high yield decreases; c) adding said gas in such an amount to maintain said relatively high yield; and d) repeating steps b and c so that said relatively high yield is maintained at a constant level.
- 10. The system of claim 1 wherein said means for alternating said gas comprises:a) adding said gas to the reaction such that a relatively high yield is obtained; b) reducing said supply of said gas until a relatively low yield is obtained; and c) repeating steps a and b such that the average yield is greater than the low yield.
- 11. The system of claim 1 wherein said reactor has an air feed and an organic reactant feed, and wherein said gas is injected into said air feed.
- 12. The system of claim 1 wherein said reactor has a feed which comprises a mixture of air and organic reactant, and wherein said gas is injected into this feed.
- 13. The system of claim 1 wherein said reactor is a fixed bed reactor comprising at least two sets of tubes having catalyst therein, each set comprising one or more, but not all of said tubes, and wherein the gas flow to each set of tubes, and wherein said gas flow to each set of tubes is regulated via a manifold or baffle such that a flow of oxygen is alternated between each set, and when oxygen is injected into a first set or sets in said relatively high amount, oxygen is injected into a second set or sets in said relatively low amount.
- 14. The system of claim 1 wherein said gas is injected into different regions within said fixed-bed reactor or a fluidized-bed reactor.
- 15. The system of claim 1 wherein said gas is provided from a single adsorption bed which is directly attached to said reactor.
- 16. The system of claim 1 wherein said gas is provided from an accumulator.
