Claims
- 1. A reconfigured microwavable food package assembly ready for heating in a microwave oven, comprising:
- (a) a quantity of food; and
- (b) a microwavable food supporting means supporting the quantity of food for heating thereof within said microwave oven, said food supporting means including a food supporting surface and being formed by at least part of a packaging means for combining together said food supporting surface and the quantity of food in an initial configuration for shipping and storage;
- wherein said packaging means comprises in said initial configuration a carton having a top wall portion and a bottom wall portion which are connected together by at least one side wall portion, and opening means for at least partially disconnecting one of said top and bottom wall portions relative to the other in a manner enabling formation of the reconfigured microwavable food package assembly by moving said top wall portion relative to said bottom wall portion of the carton; and
- wherein after formation of said reconfigured microwavable food package assembly said top and bottom wall portions are at least partially disconnected from one another and rearranged from said initial configuration with respect to said quantity of food to form with said side wall portion an at least partially enclosed air space between said food supporting surface and a support surface of the microwave oven wherein the air space has a configuration which promotes microwave heating of said quantity of food.
- 2. A food package assembly according to claim 1, wherein said means for at least partially disconnecting one of the top and bottom wall portions creates a hinge-like interconnection about which the top wall portion may be rotated relative to said bottom wall portion as a means of converting said packaging means from its initial configuration into said reconfigured microwavable food package assembly while simultaneously forming said at least partially enclosed air space.
- 3. A food package assembly, comprising:
- (a) a food supporting means for supporting a quantity of food during heating thereof within a microwave oven, said food supporting means including a food supporting surface; and
- (b) packaging means for combining together said food supporting surface and the quantity of food in a first configuration for shipping and storage and in a second configuration for microwave heating;
- wherein said packaging means comprises a carton having a top wall portion and a bottom wall portion which are connected together by at least one said wall portion in said first configuration of the packaging means, and opening means for at least partially disconnecting one of said top and bottom wall portions relative to the other in a manner enabling said packaging means to be brought from said first configuration into said second configuration by a rearranging of said top wall portion relative to said bottom wall portion of the carton;
- wherein said one of said top and bottom wall portions is manipulable relative to the other, once at least partially disconnected, into a position forming a partially enclosed air space between said food supporting surface and a support surface of a microwave oven in the second configuration of said packaging means; and
- wherein a microwave interactive means for browning and crisping the quantity of food is provided on said food supporting surface.
- 4. A food package assembly, comprising:
- (a) a food supporting means for supporting a quantity of food during heating thereof within a microwave oven, said food supporting means including a food supporting surface; and
- (b) packaging means for combining together said food supporting surface and the quantity of food in a first configuration for shipping and storage and in a second configuration for microwave heating;
- wherein said packaging means comprises a carton having a top wall portion and a bottom wall portion which are connected together by at least one said wall portion in said first configuration of the packaging means, and opening means for at least partially disconnecting one of said top and bottom wall portions relative to the other in a manner enabling said packaging means to be brought from said first configuration into said second configuration by a rearranging of said top wall portion relative to said bottom wall portion of the carton;
- wherein said one of said top and bottom wall portions is manipulable relative to the other, once at least partially disconnected, into a position forming a partially enclosed air space between said food supporting surface and a support surface of a microwave oven in the second configuration of said packaging means; and
- wherein said food supporting means includes a layer of paperboard and wherein said packaging means includes a microwave interactive means for converting microwave energy to heat which may be used to heat the quantity of food, said layer of paperboard being positioned between said microwave interactive means and the quantity of food when said packaging means is in its second configuration.
- 5. A food package assembly; comprising
- (a) a food supporting means for supporting a quantity of food during heating thereof within a microwave oven, said food supporting means including a food supporting surface;
- (b) a microwave interactive means for converting microwave energy into heat for heating the quantity of food provided on said food supporting surface;
- (c) packaging means for combining together said food supporting surface and the quantity of food in a first configuration for shipping and storage and in a second configuration for microwave heating, said packaging means including a carton having a generally rectangular top wall, a generally rectangular bottom wall of the same dimensions as said top wall and four generally vertical side wall portions interconnecting corresponding edges of said top and bottom walls; and
- (d) opening means for at least partially disconnecting one of said top and bottom walls relative to the other to form a hinge-like connection in one of said four side walls to enable said packaging means to be converted from said first configuration into said second configuration by rotating at least a portion of said top wall relative to at least a portion of said bottom wall of the carton, wherein said one of said top and bottom wall portions is manipulable relative to the other, once at least partially disconnected, into a position forming at least a partially enclosed air space between said food support surface and a support surface of a microwave oven in the second configuration of said packaging means.
- 6. A food package assembly according to claim 5, wherein said opening means includes severing means formed in each of the other three said side walls to allow said hinge-like connection to be formed in said one side wall.
- 7. A food package assembly according to claim 6, wherein said severing means includes a removable strip in each of said other three side walls.
- 8. A food package assembly, comprising:
- (a) a food supporting means for supporting a quantity of food during heating thereof within a microwave oven, said food supporting means including a food supporting surface with a microwave interactive means provided thereon for browning and crisping the quantity of food; and
- (b) package means for combining together said food supporting surface and the quantity of food in a first configuration for shipping and storage and in a second configuration for microwave heating;
- wherein said packaging means comprises a carton having a top wall portion and a bottom wall portion which are connected together by at least one side wall portion in said first configuration of the packaging means, and opening means for at least partially disconnecting one of said top and bottom wall portions relative to the other in a manner enabling said packaging means to be brought from said first configuration into said second configuration by a rearranging of said top wall portion relative to said bottom wall portion of the carton; and
- wherein said one of said top and bottom wall portions is manipulable relative to the other, once at least partially disconnected, into a position forming a partially enclosed air space between said food supporting surface and a support surface of a microwave oven in the second configuration of said packaging means.
- 9. A food package assembly, comprising:
- (a) a food supporting means for supporting a quantity of food during heating thereof within a microwave oven, said food supporting means including a food supporting surface having a layer of paperboard; and
- (b) package means for combining together said food supporting surface and the quantity of food in a first configuration for shipping and storage and in a second configuration for microwave heating;
- wherein said packaging means comprises a carton having a top wall portion and a bottom wall portion which are connected together by at least one side wall portion in said first configuration of the packaging means, opening means for at least partially disconnecting one of said top and bottom wall portions relative to the other in a manner enabling said packaging means to be brought from said first configuration into said second configuration by a rearranging of said top wall portion relative to said bottom wall portion of the carton, and a microwave interactive means for converting microwave energy to heat which may be used to heat the quantity of food, said layer of paperboard being positioned between said microwave interactive means and the quantity of food when said packaging means is in it second configuration; and
- wherein said one of said top and bottom wall portions is manipulable relative to the other, once at least partially disconnected, into a position forming a partially enclosed air space between said food supporting surface and a support surface of a microwave oven in the second configuration of said packaging means.
- 10. A food package assembly for use in heating a predetermined quantity of food in a microwave oven having a support surface, comprising packaging means for enclosing the predetermined quantity of food in a package assembly, said packaging means comprising separate and distinct inner and outer microwavable packaging components, said inner packaging component being sized and configured for being received, along with said predetermined quantity of food, within a receiving space defined by the outer packaging component without an enclosed air filled space being disposed under the quantity of food in a first configuration of said packaging assembly for shipping and storage with a minimum of wasted space, and said inner packaging element being removed from said receiving space when the packaging assembly is converted into a second configuration for cooking, at least one of said packaging components being positionally rearranged relative to said quantity of food such that said quantity of food is situated in an elevated position with respect to said microwave oven support surface by a stand formed, at least in part, by said at least one positionally rearranged packaging component when said at least one positionally rearranged component is disposed upon said microwave oven support surface to form an air space between said quantity of food and said microwave oven support surface wherein the air space has a configuration which promotes microwave heating of said quantity of food.
- 11. A food package assembly according to claim 10, wherein said inner packaging component comprises a removable tray sized for receipt within said receiving space with the quantity of food therein when the package assembly is in said first configuration.
- 12. A food package assembly according to claim 11, wherein said removable tray is formed of microwave transparent material and has a support wall bounded by a perimetric wall, said support being sized for receiving the quantity of food thereon.
- 13. A food package assembly according to claim 12, wherein said perimetric wall is provided with sufficient strength to support the quantity of food, independent of said outer package body, when said removable tray is placed in an inverted condition and the quantity of food is placed thereon in said second configuration of the package assembly.
- 14. A food package assembly for use in heating a predetermined quantity of food in a microwave oven having a support surface, comprising packaging means for enclosing the predetermined quantity of food in a package assembly, said packaging means comprising separate and distinct inner and outer packaging components, said inner packaging component being sized and configured for being received, along with said predetermined quantity of food, within a receiving space defined by the outer packaging component without an enclosed air filled space being disposed under the quantity of food in a first configuration of said packaging assembly for shipping and storage with a minimum of wasted space, and said inner packaging element being removable from said receiving space for enabling the packaging assembly to be converted into a second configuration for cooking, at least one of said packaging components being positionally rearranged relative to said quantity of food such that said quantity of food is situated in an elevated position with respect to said microwave oven support surface by a stand formed, at least in part, by said at least one positionally rearranged packaging component when said at least one positionally rearranged component is disposed upon said microwave oven support surface, said assembly further comprising heating means for converting microwave energy to heat, said means including a microwave interactive layer for browning and crisping of food affixed to said inner packaging component.
