Claims
- 1. A method for making an easy open tear control pouch having a front face and a rear face, said method comprising:
- (i) forming face-to-face films comprising barrier polymeric material, said films having an inner surface and an outer surface;
- (ii) roughening a specific portion on the outer surface of either one or each film to form a roughened portion on one or each film, said roughened portion defining a tear control area and a tear initiation area;
- (iii) positioning said films face-to-face with the inner surfaces facing each other and sealing the face-to-face films to create a sealed area and an unsealed area to form an open pouch;
- (iv) filling the open pouch; and
- (v) further sealing the face-to-face films to form a closed pouch, wherein said roughened portion extends across and beyond a sealed area of one or each film and onto an unsealed area.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein steps (iii) to (v) are performed by
- (a) placing fill of the pouch on the inside surface of one of the films,
- (b) positioning the other film thereover with the inside surface thereof adjacent to said fill, and
- (c) sealing the sides of the films with the fill therebetween.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein steps (i) and (ii) are performed by
- (a) forming a film having the front face and the rear face of the pouch juxtaposed, said film having an imaginary center line; and
- (b) roughening a specific area about the center line and on the outer surface of the film said roughened portion defining a tear control area and a tear initiation area; and
- (c) folding or slitting the film along the center line to form face-to-face films.
- 4. The method of any one of claims 1, 2, or 3, wherein the roughening is by an embossing roll, wire brush, a gritty surface or a printing press.
- 5. The method of any one of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the polymeric barrier material comprises an extrusion laminated film comprising a plurality of superimposed layers comprising, from outer surface to inner surface, a first layer comprising polyester, a second layer comprising polyvinylidene chloride copolymer, a third layer comprising ink, a fourth layer comprising primer, a fifth layer comprising low density polyethylene, a sixth layer comprising ethylene vinyl acetate, a seventh layer comprising ionomer resin, and an eighth layer comprising ionomer resin.
- 6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the polyvinylidene chloride copolymer comprises a polyvinylidene chloride vinyl chloride copolymer.
- 7. The method according to claim 5 wherein the polyvinylidene chloride copolymer comprises a polyvinylidene chloride methyl acrylate copolymer.
- 8. The method according to claim 4 wherein the polymeric barrier material comprises an extrusion laminated film comprising a plurality of superimposed layers comprising, from outer surface to inner surface, a first layer comprising polyester, a second layer comprising polyvinylidene chloride copolymer, a third layer comprising ink, a fourth layer comprising primer, a fifth layer comprising low density polyethylene, a sixth layer comprising ethylene vinyl acetate, a seventh layer comprising ionomer resin and an eighth layer comprising ionomer resin.
- 9. The method according to claim 8 wherein the polyvinylidene chloride copolymer comprises a polyvinylidene chloride vinyl chloride copolymer.
- 10. The method according to claim 8 wherein the polyvinylidene chloride copolymer comprises a polyvinylidene chloride methyl acrylate copolymer.
- 11. A method for making an easy open tear control pouch comprising:
- forming a hollow tube comprising barrier polymeric material, said tube having two ends, an inner surface and an outer surface;
- roughening a circumferential or a portion of a circumferential area on the outer surface of said tube at least one end thereof, said roughened portion defining a tear control area and a tear initiation area;
- sealing one end of said tube to create a first sealed area and an unsealed area to make an open pouch;
- filling said open pouch; and
- sealing the other end to form a second sealed area such that said roughened portion extends across and beyond one or both of said first or second sealed areas and onto an unsealed area.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the roughening is by an embossing roll, wire brush, a gritty surface or a printing press.
- 13. The method according to any one of claims 11 or 12 wherein the tube is formed from a film comprising a plurality of superimposed layers comprising, from outer surface to inner surface, a first layer comprising polyester, a second layer comprising polyvinylidene chloride copolymer, a third layer comprising ink, a fourth layer comprising primer, a fifth layer comprising low density polyethylene, a sixth layer comprising ethylene vinyl acetate, a seventh layer comprising ionomer resin, and an eighth layer comprising ionomer resin.
- 14. The method according to claim 13 wherein the polyvinylidene chloride copolymer comprises a polyvinylidene chloride vinyl chloride copolymer.
- 15. The method according to claim 13 wherein the polyvinylidene chloride copolymer comprises a polyvinylidene chloride methyl acrylate copolymer.
- 16. The method of claim 1 wherein said roughened portion extends across and beyond one sealed area and into another sealed area.
- 17. The method of claim 11 wherein said roughened portion extends across and beyond one sealed area and into another sealed area.
