Claims
- 1. A packet switching system comprising:
- a plurality of local units each accommodating a plurality of packet circuits, each of said local units including label conversion means, a self-routing switch and control means for performing call processing control in respect of a control packet, said label conversion means being operable to generate first routing information indicative of an output port of said self-routing switch depending upon a virtual channel identifier of a packet received from one of said packet circuits and said self routing switch being operable to effect self-routing of said packet based on the first routing information; and
- a tandem unit including at least one self-routing switch for interconnecting said local units;
- each of said local units further including means for setting, between the local unit and said tandem unit, the same virtual channel as that between said tandem unit and a destination local unit which is one of a remainder of said plurality of local units, with respect to a call to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit and means for inserting second routing information indicative of an output port of the self-routing switch of said tandem unit into a packet to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit, whereby when a call control packet from one of said local units arrives at said tandem unit, said call control packet is transferred to said destination local unit based on said second routing information without undergoing call processing control.
- 2. A packet switching system according to claim 1 wherein each of said local units includes means for determining a virtual channel of a reception call when operating as said destination local unit for information transfer whereby different virtual channels are allotted to calls from a plurality of different local units so that logic connection is identified by only a virtual channel identifier (VCI) without resort to an originating local unit.
- 3. A packet switching system comprising:
- a plurality of local units each accommodating a plurality of packet circuits, each of said local units including label conversion means, a self-routing switch and control means for performing call processing control in respect of a control packet, said label conversion means being operable to generate first routing information indicative of an output port of said self-routing switch depending upon a virtual channel identifier of a packet received from one of said packet circuits and said self routing switch being operable to effect self-routing of said packet based on the first routing information; and
- a tandem unit including at least one self-routing switch for interconnecting said local units;
- each of said local units further including means for setting, between the local unit and said tandem unit, the same virtual channel as that between said tandem unit and a destination local unit which is one of a remainder of said plurality of local units, with respect to a call to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit and means for inserting second routing information indicative of an output port of the self-routing switch of said tandem unit into a packet to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit, whereby when a call control packet from one of said local units arrives at said tandem unit, said call control packet is transferred to said destination local unit based on said second routing information without undergoing call processing control;
- wherein a plurality of packet circuits are provided between an originating local unit which is one of said plurality of said local units and said destination local unit through said tandem unit, said originating local unit is so constructed as to transfer to said destination local unit a first control signal indicating a circuit use condition between said originating local unit and tandem unit, and said destination local unit is so constructed as to select a circuit for use in a communication of user packets in accordance with said circuit use condition between said originating local unit and said tandem unit and another circuit use condition between said destination local unit and tandem unit and transmit a second control signal to inform said originating local unit of the selected circuit.
- 4. A packet switching system comprising:
- a plurality of local units each accommodating a plurality of packet circuits, each of said local units including label conversion means, a self-routing switch and control means for performing call processing control in respect of a control packet, said label conversion means being operable to generate first routing information indicative of an output port of said self-routing switch depending upon a virtual channel identifier of a packet received from one of said packet circuits and said self-routing switch being operable to effect self-routing of said packet based on the first routing information; and
- a tandem unit including at least one self-routing switch for interconnecting said local units through internal packet circuits;
- each of said local units further including means for setting, between the local unit and said tandem unit, the same virtual channel as that between said tandem unit and a destination local unit which is one of a remainder of said plurality of local units, with respect to a call to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit and means for inserting second routing information indicative of an output port of the self-routing switch of said tandem unit into a packet to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit;
- at least two of said plurality of local units, one of said at least two of said plurality of local units defining a by-pass route by way of said tandem unit and the other of said at least two of said plurality of local units defining them for an outgoing route on one of said packet circuits toward another switching system;
- each of said at least two local units having means for storing the bandwidth assignment state with respect to said outgoing route and one of said internal packet circuits used for the by-pass route so that the local unit, when originating an outgoing route call, selects one of said outgoing route and said by-pass route permissible for assignment.
- 5. A packet switching system according to claim 4, wherein each of said at least two local units has means operable to indicate said bandwidth assignment state in terms of at least one threshold value and when the bandwidth assignment on said outgoing route or said by-pass route becomes over or below said threshold value upon setting or release of the outgoing route call, inform of the change of said bandwidth assignment state to the other of said at least two local units.
- 6. A packet switching system according to claim 5 wherein said threshold value is different for the time that the outgoing route call setting is effected and the time that the outgoing route call release is effected.
- 7. A packet switching system according to claim 6 wherein desired one of said two local units transmits said bandwidth assignment state in respect of each outgoing route periodically to all of the other local units.
- 8. A method in a distributed type switching system having a plurality of local units, each being connected to a plurality of external circuits, for transmitting and receiving packets on said external circuits, each packet includes a header and an information field, and a tandem unit for interconnecting said local units, said method comprising the steps of:
- adding output port information to a header of a packet received from one of said external circuits connected to one of said local units to indicate a destination of said packet within the switching system;
- self routing said packet through said local unit and said tandem unit to deliver the packet to said destination based on said output port information;
- storing a bandwidth allotment state of outgoing routes of each local unit to permit a call originating local unit to determine whether a call is permissible on an outgoing route of the local unit; and
- when said call is determined not to be permissible on said outgoing route of said local unit, selecting one of said local units having an outgoing route on which the call is permissible.
- 9. A packet switching system comprising:
- a plurality of local units each accommodating a plurality of packet circuits, each of said local units including label conversion means, a self-routing switch and control means for performing call processing control with respect to a control packet, said label conversion means being operable to generate first routing information indicative of one of output ports of said self-routing switch depending upon a virtual channel identifier of a packet received from one of said packet circuits and said self-routing switch being operable to effect self-routing of said packet based on the output port information; and
- a tandem unit including at least one self-routing switch for interconnecting said local units via internal lines;
- each of said local units further including means for setting, on a first one of said internal lines between the local unit and said tandem unit, the same virtual channel as that on a second one of said internal lines between said tandem unit and a destination local unit which is a remaining one of said local units, with respect to a call to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit and means for inserting second routing information indicative of one of output ports of said self-routing switch of said tandem unit into a packet to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit, whereby when a call control packet arrives from one of said internal lines at said tandem unit, said call control packet is transferred to said destination local unit by said self-routing switch of said tandem unit based on the second routing information of the control packet without undergoing call processing control in said tandem unit.
- 10. A packet switching system according to claim 9 wherein each of said local units includes means for determining a virtual channel of a call when the local unit receives a call control packet from one of said internal lines and means for informing an originating local unit, which has transmitted said call control packet to the local unit, of an identifier of the virtual channel.
- 11. A packet switching system comprising:
- a plurality of local units each accommodating a plurality of packet circuits, each of said local units including label conversion means, a self-routing switch and control means for performing call processing control with respect to a control packet, said label conversion means being operable to generate first routing information indicative of one of output ports of said self-routing switch depending upon a virtual channel identifier of a packet received from one of said packet circuits and said self-routing switch being operable to effect self-routing of said packet based on the output port information; and
- a tandem unit including at least one self-routing switch for interconnecting said local units via internal lines;
- each of said local units further including means for setting, on a first one of said internal lines between the local unit and said tandem unit, the same virtual channel as that on a second one of said internal lines between said tandem unit and a destination local unit which is a remaining one of said local units, with respect to a call transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit and means for inserting second routing information indicative of one of output ports of said self-routing switch of said tandem unit into a packet to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit, whereby when a call control packet arrives from one of said internal lines at said tandem unit, said call control packet is transferred to said destination local unit by said self-routing switch of said tandem unit based on the second routing information of the control packet without undergoing call processing control in said tandem unit;
- wherein each of said plurality of local units is so constructed to communicate with said destination local unit via a selected one of a plurality of internal routes formed on said internal lines, each of said plurality of local unit further comprising first means, operable when the local unit serves as an originating local unit, for transmitting to said destination local unit a first control signal indicating a circuit use status between the local unit and said tandem unit and second means, operable when the local unit serves as the destination local unit, for selecting one of internal routes between the originating local unit and the destination local unit and transmitting a second control signal indicating the selected internal route to said originating local unit, the selection of said internal route being carried out based on said circuit use status informed by said first control signal and another circuit use status between said destination local unit and tandem unit.
- 12. A packet switching system comprising:
- a plurality of local units each accommodating a plurality of packet circuits, each of said local units including label conversion means, a self-routing switch and control means for performing call processing control in respect of a call control packet, said label conversion means being operable to generate first routing information indicative of one of output ports of said self-routing switch depending upon a virtual channel information of a packet received from one of said packet circuits and said self-routing switch being operable to effect self-routing said packet based on the first routing information of the packet; and
- a tandem unit including at least one self-routing switch for interconnecting said local units through internal packet circuits;
- each of said local units further including means for setting, between the local unit and said tandem unit, the same virtual channel identifier as that between said tandem unit and an originating local unit which is a remaining one of said local units for information transfer with respect to a call to be transferred to a destination local unit through said tandem unit, and means for inserting second routing information indicative of one of output ports of the self-routing switch of said tandem unit into a packet to be transferred to said destination local unit through said tandem unit;
- at least two of said plurality of local units, one of said at least two local units defining a by-pass route by way of said tandem unit and the other of said at least two local units defining an outgoing route on one of said packet circuits;
- each of said at least two local units having means for storing the bandwidth assignment state with respect to said outgoing route and one of said internal circuits used for said by-pass route so that the local unit, when originating an outgoing route call, selects by negotiation with a destination local unit a circuit permissible for assignment among said outgoing route and said by-pass route.
- 13. A packet switching system according to claim 12 wherein each of said at least two local units has means operable to indicate said bandwidth assignment state in terms of threshold values and when the bandwidth assignment on said outgoing route or said by-pass route becomes over or below one of said threshold values upon setting or release of the outgoing route call, inform of the status of said bandwidth assignment to other of said at least two local units.
- 14. A packet switching system according to claim 13 wherein said threshold values are different for the time that the outgoing route call setting is effected and the time that the outgoing route call release is effected.
- 15. A packet switching system according to claim 14, wherein a desired one of said at least two local units transmits said bandwidth assignment state with respect to each outgoing route periodically to the other of said at least two local units.
