- 3. The method of claim 2wherein operating the communications apparatus at the first mode of operation comprises determining the performance indicator of the transmitting computer and the network at first predetermined intervals; and wherein operating the communications apparatus at the second mode of operation comprises determining the performance indicator of the transmitting computer and the network at second predetermined intervals.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the first predetermined intervals are periodic and the second predetermined intervals are periodic.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein while the performance indicator is greater than or equal to the threshold comprises determining when the performance indicator is greater than or equal to the threshold for less than or equal to a first period of time.
- 6. The method of claim 2 wherein the first timing offset and the second timing offset are selected from the class: successive timing offsets, timing offsets determined at different times.
- 7. The method of claim 2 wherein the first timing offset is an initial timing offset.
- 8. An apparatus coupled to a remote computer via a computer network comprises:
a processor; and a tangible media coupled to the processor comprising:
code that directs the processor to determine at first time intervals, a performance indicator of the remote computer and the computer network; code that directs the processor to determine when the performance indicator exceeds or is equal to a first threshold for a first period of time; code that directs the processor to determine at second time intervals, the performance indicator of the remote computer and the computer network after it is determined that the performance indicator does not exceed or does not equal the first threshold for the first period of time; code that directs the processor to determine at the second time intervals when the performance indicator exceeds or is equal to a second threshold after it is determined that the performance indicator does not exceed or does not equal the first threshold for the first period of time; and code that directs the processor to determine at the first time intervals, the performance indicator of the remote computer and the computer network after it is determined that the performance indicator exceeds or equals the second threshold.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the performance indicator comprises a difference between a first timing offset and a second timing offset.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein code that directs the processor to determine when the performance indicator exceeds or is equal to the first threshold further comprises:
code that directs the processor to determine a first timing offset; code that directs the processor to determine a second timing offset; and code that directs the processor to determine a difference between the first timing offset and the second timing offset.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the tangible media further comprises code that directs the processor to use the second timing offset as the first timing offset when the difference between the first timing offset and the second timing offset exceeds or is equal to the first threshold.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the first time intervals are greater than the second time intervals.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the first time intervals are periodic and the second time intervals are periodic.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the first time intervals are less than approximately one second and the second time intervals are greater than approximately one second.
- 15. A method for an apparatus for receiving packetized communications across a network from a transmission source, the method comprises:
entering an acquisition mode, wherein the acquisition mode includes: determining a first communications performance indicator of the transmission source and the network at first time intervals, determining when the first communications performance indicator is less than a first threshold for a first duration, and entering a tracking mode when the first communications performance indicator is less than or equal to the first threshold for the first duration; and entering a tracking mode, wherein the tracking mode includes: determining a second communications performance indicator of the transmission source and the network at second time intervals, determining when the second communication performance indicator exceeds or is equal to a second threshold, and entering the acquisition mode when the second communications performance indicator exceeds or is equal to the second threshold.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the first time intervals are lesser than the second time intervals.
- 17. The method of claim 15 further comprising outputting communications from the acquisition mode in response to the packetized communications.
- 18. The method of claim 15 wherein determining the first communications performance indicator comprises determining a difference between a first timing offset and determining a second timing offset.
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein determining when the first communications performance indicator is less than or equal to the first threshold comprises determining whether the difference between the first timing offset and the second timing offset is less than or equal to the first threshold.
