Claims
- 1. A structured packing brick for positioning in a column having a longitudinal axis, the brick comprising:
- a plurality of corrugated plates disposed in parallel relation with corrugations in adjacent plates being disposed in criss-crossing relationship, said plurality of plates having opposed ends which form end surfaces of the bricks, at least one of said end surfaces being inclined for engaging in a parallel fashion an inclined end surface of a horizontally adjacent brick, said inclined end surface being disposed at an angle to the column longitudinal axis when the brick is positioned in the column, wherein said corrugations form openings in the inclined end surface which allow liquid, when present, to flow vertically downward from or into the inclined end surface.
- 2. The packing brick of claim 1, wherein said angle of said inclined end surface to the column axis is within the range of approximately fifteen to forty-five degrees.
- 3. The packing brick of claim 1, wherein both of said end surfaces are generally planar and angled towards one another such that the brick in vertical cross section has a generally trapezoidal shape.
- 4. The packing brick of claim 1, wherein both of said end surfaces are generally planar and parallel to one another such that the brick in vertical cross section has a generally parallelogram shape.
- 5. The packing brick of claim 1, wherein said brick has generally vertical sides.
- 6. The packing brick of claim 5, wherein said brick has upper and lower surfaces extending generally parallel to each other and generally perpendicular to said vertical sides.
- 7. A method of constructing a packing bed for a column, the bed including a plurality of bricks, each brick having a plurality of corrugated plates defining at least one end surface disposed at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the column, with corrugations in adjacent plates being disposed in criss-crossing relationship and forming openings in the angled end surfaces, the method comprising:
- positioning bricks in end-to-end relation in a lower first layer generally perpendicular to the column axis such that the angled end surfaces of adjacent bricks engage one another and liquid, when present, is able to flow vertically downward between the openings in the angled end surface of adjacent bricks; and
- positioning bricks in end-to-end relation in an upper second layer generally perpendicular to the column axis such that each of the angled end surfaces of adjacent bricks engage one another and liquid, when present, is able to flow vertically downward between the openings in the angled end surface of adjacent bricks, wherein said second layer is rotated about the column axis with respect to said first layer.
- 8. The method of claim 7, including positioning the bricks in end-to-end relation in a plurality of side-by-side rows in said first and second layers.
- 9. A method of constructing a packing bed in a column having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
- positioning in end to end relation a plurality of bricks to form a first layer of bricks, each of said bricks including a plurality of corrugated plates disposed in parallel relation with corrugations in adjacent plates being disposed in criss-crossing relationship, at least some of said bricks having at least one end surface disposed at an angle to the column longitudinal axis and engaging in a parallel fashion the angled end surface of an adjacent brick, said corrugations forming openings in the angled end surface and liquid, when present, is able to flow vertically downward from the openings in the angled end surface of said at least some bricks into underlying openings in the angled end surfaces of the adjacent bricks.
- 10. The method of claim 9, including positioning the bricks in a plurality of side by side rows, with the bricks in each row being positioned end to end.
- 11. The method of claim 10, including positioning in end to end relation another plurality of said bricks in end to end relation in a plurality of side by side rows to form a second layer of bricks vertically adjacent said first layer of bricks.
- 12. The method of claim 11, including positioning said bricks in said first and second layers so that the rows of bricks in the first and second layers extend in different directions.
- 13. The method of claim 10, wherein at least one of said bricks has both said end surfaces angled with respect to the column longitudinal axis, and including the step of positioning said at least one brick in one of said rows.
- 14. The method of claim 10, wherein the end surfaces of at least one brick are generally planar and parallel to one another such that said at least one brick in vertical cross section has a generally parallelogram shape, and including the step of positioning said at least one brick in one of said rows.
- 15. The method of claim 9, including positioning said bricks such that said angle of said at least one end surface to the column axis is within a range of 15 to 45 degrees.
- 16. A method of constructing a packing bed in a column having a longitudinal axis, comprising:
- positioning in end to end relation a plurality of bricks to form a first layer of bricks, said bricks being positioned in a plurality of side by side rows, with the bricks in each row being positioned end to end, each of said bricks including a plurality of plates disposed in parallel relation and having corrugations formed therein, at least some of said bricks having at least one end surface disposed at an angle to the column longitudinal axis and engaging in a parallel fashion the angled end surface of an adjacent brick, wherein the end surfaces of at least one brick in said side by side rows are generally planar and angled toward one another such that said at least one brick in vertical cross section has a generally trapezoidal shape.
