Claims
- 1. Apparatus for the pad printing of an image on the surface of a substrate, said image being defined by a length and width, the length of said image being greater than the width, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means for holding a substrate whose surface is to be printed with an elongated image while said substrate is being printed, said elongated image being defined by a predetermined width and a predetermined length greater than said predetermined width;
- (b) an elongated image pattern means being provided in operative association with the substrate holding means, said elongated image pattern means being of a predetermined length and width and being defined by front and back edges and by a horizontally disposed elongated planar top surface, an elongated image pattern defined by a predetermined length and width being provided on the top planar surface of said image pattern means, said image pattern extending lengthwise of the top planar surface, the predetermined length of the image pattern being greater than the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern, and the predetermined length and width of the image pattern being less than the predetermined length and width of the image pattern means, said elongated image pattern being of the same predetermined length and width as the elongated image to be printed;
- (c) an ink cup having a hollow interior and being defined by a horizontally disposed circular-shaped bottom surface in operative association with said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup having a predetermined diameter less than the predetermined length of the image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern;
- (d) means for translation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise of said image pattern means on said top planar surface across the elongated image pattern while the image pattern is being flooded with ink;
- (e) an elongated image transfer pad being operatively supported above the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said image transfer pad being of a predetermined length greater than the predetermined length of said image pattern and defining a lengthwise direction, the lengthwise direction of the image transfer pad extending in the lengthwise direction of said image pattern; and
- (f) means for movement of the elongated image transfer pad in a straight line in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of translation of the ink cup transfer of said elongated image pattern to a substrate.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the elongated image pattern in the elongated image pattern means is of a rectangular shape defined by front and back edges and said elongated image pattern is located equidistantly between said front and back edges of the elongated image pattern means, said elongated image pattern means being defined by a centerline located between the front and back edges of the image pattern means extending lengthwise of the top surface.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the elongated image pattern means comprises a steel plate and the elongated image pattern is engraved in said steel plate.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein a diameter of the circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup coincides with the centerline of the elongated pattern means.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein a circular-shaped detachable rim of predetermined diameter is provided on the circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup, the predetermined diameter of the circular-shaped detachable rim being less than the predetermined length of the image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising an elongated housing defined by elongated, rectangular-shaped top and bottom members in spaced-apart parallel disposition to one another, spaced-apart, parallel front and back walls intersecting with the top and bottom members and spaced-apart, elongated, rectangular-shaped end walls interconnected with the top and bottom members and the front and back walls, a top planar surface being provided on the top member for supporting the elongated image pattern means, and an internal elongated cavity being defined by said elongated housing.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the ink cup is defined by a circular-shaped rim having a top end and a bottom end and the bottom end of the rim is in a horizontally disposed plane below that of the bottom of the ink cup.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the flatness of the planar top surface of the elongated image pattern means relative to the bottom of the rim of the ink cup does not vary from one end to the other by an amount greater than .+-.0.0005 inch.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein a circular-shaped rim having a top end and a bottom end is detachably connected to the circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup and said bottom end of the circular-shaped rim is provided in contact with the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means and means is provided for adjusting the pressure of the contact of the circular-shaped rim with the top surface of the elongated image pattern means.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the elongated image pattern means comprises in combination a thin, flexible, steel plate defined by a top surface and a bottom surface, and a thin layer of a photopolymer is laminated to the top surface of the steel plate, said image pattern being provided in said photopolymer.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein a rim of predetermined diameter is attached to the bottom of the ink cup, said rim varying in diameter from 60 to 135 mm and the elongated image pattern is of a predetermined length of up to 18 inches and a predetermined width of up to 5 inches.
- 12. Process for the pad printing of an image of a predetermined length and a predetermined width on the surface of an elongated substrate:
- (a) providing an elongated image pattern having a predetermined length and a predetermined width, the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern being greater than the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern and defining a lengthwise direction;
- (b) providing an ink cup having the shape of an inverted cup, said ink cup being defined by a closed top end and an open bottom end of a predetermined diameter, the open bottom end of the ink cup providing a reservoir for ink, the diameter of the ink cup at the open bottom end being less than the predetermined length of the image pattern and greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern;
- (c) reciprocating the ink cup in a back and forth manner lengthwise and across said elongated image pattern whereby said elongated image pattern is flooded with ink and at the same time excess ink is doctored off the elongated image pattern;
- (d) providing an elongated substrate on which said elongated image pattern is printed in operative association with said elongated image pattern, said elongated substrate being defined by a lengthwise direction and being of a greater length than the length of the image pattern;
- (e) providing an elongated flexible transfer pad of a predetermined length defining a lengthwise direction for transferring the elongated image pattern to the elongated substrate to be printed, said elongated flexible transfer pad being located above and the lengthwise direction of the elongated transfer pad extending in the lengthwise direction of the elongated image pattern and being provided in opposition to the elongated image pattern the length of said elongated image transfer pad being sufficiently long enough so as to transfer the elongated image pattern to said elongated substrate;
- (f) causing the elongated flexible transfer pad to be placed in pressure contact with the elongated image pattern; and
- (g) causing the elongated flexible transfer pad to travel in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the ink cup; and
- (h) placing the elongated flexible transfer pad in pressure contact with said elongated substrate whereby said elongated image pattern is printed on said elongated substrate.
- 13. Process according to claim 12 further comprising
- (a) interrupting the pad printing process whereby no image is being printed and the pad printing apparatus is placed in a condition of rest; and
- (b) reciprocating the ink cup back and forth across the previously flooded elongated image pattern thereby to mix the ink in the reservoir of the ink cup with the ink in the elongated image pattern and whereby to lubricate the ink in the elongated image pattern so as to prevent drying out of the ink in the elongated image pattern.
- 14. Process according to claim 13 whereby the ink cup is reciprocated back and forth at regular intervals.
- 15. Apparatus for the pad printing of an elongated image of predetermined length and predetermined width on the surface of an elongated substrate, the predetermined length of the image being greater than the predetermined width of the image, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means for holding an elongated substrate whose surface is to be printed with said elongated image while said elongated substrate is being printed;
- (b) a horizontally disposed, elongated image pattern member of predetermined length and width being provided in operative association with the elongated substrate holding means, front and back elongated edges parallel to one another being provided on said elongated image pattern member defining the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern member and planar top and bottom elongated surfaces in parallel disposition to one another being provided on said elongated image pattern member, an elongated image pattern being provided on the top planar surface of said elongated image pattern member of the same predetermined length and width as the elongated image to be printed, the predetermined length of the image pattern being of lesser length than the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern member, said elongated image pattern extending lengthwise of the elongated image pattern member, said elongated image pattern being located between the front and back elongated edges of the elongated image pattern member, the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern being of a width less than the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern member;
- (c) an ink cup having the shape of an inverted cup thereby to provide a closed top end and an open bottom end being provided in opposition to the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern member, a reservoir being provided in the ink cup for holding ink for flooding the elongated image pattern with ink, the open bottom end of the ink cup being of circular-shape and having a diameter greater than the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern and less than the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern;
- (d) an elongated housing being defined by elongated top and bottom members in spaced-apart parallel disposition to one another, and spaced-apart, elongated, parallel front and back walls intersecting with the elongated top and bottom members, and spaced-apart, elongated, parallel, end walls interconnected with the elongated top and bottom members and the elongated front and back walls, an internal elongated cavity being provided in said elongated housing, a planar top surface being provided on the elongated top member of the housing for supporting the elongated bottom planar surface of the elongated image pattern member;
- (e) means for translation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise on said top planar elongated surface of the elongated image pattern member and across the length of the elongated image pattern while the elongated image pattern is being flooded with ink, said translation means being provided in operative combination with the elongated housing;
- (f) an elongated image transfer pad for transfer of the elongated image pattern to the elongated substrate to be printed being operatively supported above the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern member; and
- (g) means for movement of the elongated image transfer pad in a straight line across the elongated image pattern in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of movement of the ink cup.
- 16. Apparatus for the pad printing of an elongated image of predetermined length and width on the surface of a substrate comprising:
- (a) a horizontally disposed, elongated image pattern member comprising front and back elongated edges parallel to one another defining the length and width of the elongated image pattern member, a planar top elongated surface being provided on the elongated image pattern member, an elongated image pattern being provided on the top planar surface of said elongated image pattern member, the length and width of the elongated image pattern being the same as the predetermined length and width of the elongated image to be printed, the length of the elongated image pattern being of a lesser length than the elongated image pattern member, said elongated image pattern being located between the front and back edges of the elongated image pattern member and extending lengthwise of the elongated image pattern member, the width of the elongated image pattern being less than the width of the elongated image pattern member and less than the length of the elongated image pattern;
- (b) an ink cup having the shape of an inverted cup thereby to provide a closed top end and an open bottom end being provided in opposition to the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern member, a reservoir being provided in the ink cup for holding ink for flooding the elongated image pattern with ink, the open bottom end of the ink cup being of circular-shape and having a diameter greater than the width of the elongated image pattern and less than the length of the elongated image pattern;
- (c) means for translation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise on said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern member and across the length and width of the image pattern while the elongated image pattern is being flooded with ink;
- (d) an elongated image transfer pad of a predetermined length greater than the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern being operatively supported above the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern member, the length of said elongated image transfer pad extending lengthwise of the elongated image pattern member and being provided in opposition to the elongated image pattern; and
- (e) means for movement of the elongated image transfer pad vertically downwardly and upwardly into and out of contact with said elongated image pattern and in a straight line in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of movement of the ink cup.
- 17. Apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the translation means comprises a stepping motor.
- 18. Process for the pad printing of an elongated image of a predetermined length and width on the surface of a substrate, the predetermined length of the elongated image being greater than the width;
- (a) providing a pad printer, an image pattern member being provided on the pad printer, said image pattern member being defined by elongated, spaced-apart front and back edges in parallel disposition to one another whereby to define the length and width of the image pattern member, and by a top planar surface, an elongated image pattern being provided in the top planar surface of the image pattern member of the same length and width as the predetermined length and width of the elongated image to be printed, the length and width of the image pattern member being of a greater length and width than the length and width of said elongated image pattern;
- (b) providing an ink cup on the pad printer having the shape of an inverted cup, said ink cup being defined by a closed top end and a circular-shaped open bottom end, the circular-shaped open bottom end of the ink cup providing a reservoir for ink and being provided in opposition to the top planar surface of the image pattern member, the diameter of the ink cup at the circular-shaped open bottom end being less than the length of the elongated image pattern and greater than the width of the elongated image pattern;
- (c) providing ink in the reservoir of said ink cup;
- (d) providing a substrate on which an elongated image is to be printed, said substrate being of a length greater than the length of the elongate image pattern and defining a lengthwise direction, said substrate being provided in operative association with said elongated image for printing of an elongated image on said elongated substrate, the lengthwise direction of said substrate extending in the lengthwise direction of the elongated image pattern;
- (e) reciprocating the ink cup lengthwise of the elongated image pattern member in a forward stroke and a backward stroke across the elongated image pattern thereby flooding the elongated image pattern with ink;
- (f) providing an elongated flexible transfer pad of predetermined length sufficient for transfer of the elongated image pattern from the image pattern member to the surface of the elongated substrate to be printed, the lengthwise direction of said elongated flexible transfer pad extending in the lengthwise of the elongated image pattern;
- (g) placing the elongated flexible transfer pad in pressure contact with the elongated image pattern on the image pattern member to transfer the elongated image pattern to the elongated flexible transfer pad;
- (h) causing the elongated flexible transfer pad with the transferred elongated image pattern thereon to travel in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of travel of the ink cup; and
- (I) placing the elongated flexible transfer pad with the transferred elongated image pattern thereon in pressure contact with the elongated substrate to be printed whereby the elongated image pattern is transferred to the surface of the elongated substrate.
- 19. Process according to claim 18 further comprising maintaining the ink cup in fixed position so as not to rotate while the ink cup is being reciprocated back and forth across the elongated image pattern.
- 20. Process according to claim 18 further comprising adjusting the pressure of the open bottom end of the ink cup against the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern member whereby to provide the desired pressure of the ink cup against said top surface.
- 21. Process according to claim 18 further comprising moving the ink cup in a back and forth movement across the flooded elongated image pattern when the pad printer is in an inoperative stage and at a period of rest so as to cause fresh ink from the ink cup reservoir to be mixed with the ink in the flooded elongated image pattern thereby preventing the ink in the flooded image pattern from drying out.
- 22. Process according to claim 18 further comprising cushioning the travel of the ink cup at the end of the forward and backward strokes.
- 23. Apparatus for use in a pad printing machine wherein a transfer pad and an ink cup are moved in directions perpendicular to one another across an elongated image pattern for the pad printing of an elongated image on the surface of a substrate, said image being defined by a length and width, the length of said image being greater than the width, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) an elongated image pattern means being adapted for mounting in a pad printing machine comprising an elongated image transfer pad having a length greater than the length of an elongated image pattern to be transferred to a substrate and being mounted to said pad printing machine so as to move in a predetermined direction of travel in a horizontal plane, said image pattern means being of a predetermined length and width, a horizontally disposed elongated planar top surface being provided on said elongated image pattern means, an elongated image pattern defined by a predetermined length and width being provided on the top planar surface of said elongated image pattern means, said elongated image pattern extending lengthwise of said elongated top planar surface, the predetermined length of the image pattern being greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern, and the predetermined length and width of the image pattern being less than the predetermined length and width of the image pattern means;
- (b) means for mounting of said elongated image pattern means in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel of the elongated image transfer pad and in a horizontal plane parallel to the horizontal plane in which the transfer pad travels;
- (c) an inverted ink cup having a closed top end and a horizontally disposed circular-shaped bottom end being mounted to said elongated image pattern means, a hollow interior being defined by said ink cup and said bottom end being provided in operative association with said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said circular-shaped bottom end of said ink cup having a predetermined diameter less than the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern; and
- (d) means for reciprocation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise of said image pattern means on said top planar surface across the elongated image pattern for flooding the elongated image pattern with ink, said ink cup traveling in a direction of travel perpendicular to the direction of travel of the image transfer pad.
- 24. Apparatus for the pad printing of an image on the surface of a substrate, said image being defined by a length and width, the length of said image being greater than the width, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means for holding the substrate whose surface is to be printed with said image while said substrate is being printed;
- (b) an elongated image pattern means being provided in operative association with the substrate holding means, said elongated image pattern means being of a predetermined length and width and being defined by front and back edges and by a horizontally disposed elongated planar top surface, an elongated image pattern defined by a predetermined length and width being provided on the top planar surface of said image pattern means, said image pattern extending lengthwise of the top planar surface, the predetermined length of the image pattern being greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern, and the predetermined length and width of the image pattern being less than the predetermined length and width of the image pattern means;
- (c) an ink cup having a hollow interior and being defined by a horizontally disposed circular-shaped bottom surface in operative association with said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup having a predetermined diameter less than the predetermined length of the image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern;
- (d) means for translation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise of said image pattern means on said top planar surface across the elongated image pattern while the image pattern is being flooded with ink;
- (e) an image transfer pad being operatively supported above the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means;
- (f) means for movement of the image transfer pad in a straight line in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of translation of the ink cup;
- (g) an elongated housing defined by elongated, rectangular-shaped top and bottom members in spaced-apart parallel disposition to one another, spaced-apart, parallel front and back walls intersecting with the top and bottom members and spaced-apart, elongated, rectangular-shaped end walls interconnected with the top and bottom members and the front and back walls, a top planar surface being provided on the top member for supporting the elongated image pattern means, and an internal elongated cavity being defined by said elongated housing, said means for translation of the ink cup comprising slide means comprising a magnetic slide member and said magnetic slide member is located in the internal cavity of the housing for reciprocal movement between the ends of the housing.
- 25. Apparatus according to claim 24 wherein the slide means further comprises top and bottom horizontally disposed members located in spaced-apart planes parallel to one another and to the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, the top and bottom members each being defined by outer and inner ends.
- 26. Apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the slide means further comprises a vertically disposed member having top and bottom ends and said top and bottom ends are fixedly connected respectively to the outer ends of the top and bottom members of the slide means.
- 27. Apparatus according to claim 26 wherein the ink cup is detachably connected to the top member of the slide means at the inner end.
- 28. Apparatus according to claim 27 wherein the magnetic slide member is fixedly connected to the bottom member of the slide means whereby on reciprocal movement of the magnetic slide member between the ends of the housing, the ink cup will be caused to move in lengthwise direction of the elongated image pattern means and across the elongated image pattern.
- 29. Apparatus for the pad printing of an image on the surface of a substrate, said image being defined by a length and width, the length of said image being greater than the width, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means for holding the substrate whose surface is to be printed with said image while said substrate is being printed;
- (b) an elongated image pattern means being provided in operative association with the substrate holding means, said elongated image pattern means being of a predetermined length and width and being defined by front and back edges and by a horizontally disposed elongated planar top surface, an elongated image pattern defined by a predetermined length and width being provided on the top planar surface of said image pattern means, said image pattern extending lengthwise of the top planar surface, the predetermined length of the image pattern being greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern, and the predetermined length and width of the image pattern being less than the predetermined length and width of the image pattern means;
- (c) an ink cup having a hollow interior and being defined by a horizontally disposed circular-shaped bottom surface in operative association with said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup having a predetermined diameter less than the predetermined length of the image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern;
- (d) means for translation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise of said image pattern means on said top planar surface across the elongated image pattern while the image pattern is being flooded with ink;
- (e) an image transfer pad being operatively supported above the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means;
- (f) means for movement of the image transfer pad in a straight line in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of translation of the ink cup; and
- (g) means for preventing rotation of the ink cup while the ink cup is being reciprocated back and forth across the length of the elongated image pattern.
- 30. Apparatus according to claim 29 wherein said means for preventing rotation comprises a plurality of openings being provided in the inner end of the top member of the magnetic slide means, and in the top surface of the ink cup, and an elongated pin means for insertion in an opening of the top member and into an opening in alignment with that in the top member whereby the location of the ink cup relative to the image pattern means is fixed.
- 31. Apparatus for the pad printing of an image on the surface of a substrate, said image being defined by a length and width, the length of said image being greater than the width, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means for holding the substrate whose surface is to be printed with said image while said substrate is being printed;
- (b) an elongated image pattern means being provided in operative association with the substrate holding means, said elongated image pattern means being of a predetermined length and width and being defined by front and back edges and by a horizontally disposed elongated planar top surface, an elongated image pattern defined by a predetermined length and width being provided on the top planar surface of said image pattern means, said image pattern extending lengthwise of the top planar surface, the predetermined length of the image pattern being greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern, and the predetermined length and width of the image pattern being less than the predetermined length and width of the image pattern means, said elongated image pattern means comprising in combination a thin, flexible, steel plate defined by a top surface and a bottom surface, and a thin layer of a photopolymer is laminated to the top surface of the steel plate, said image pattern being provided in said photopolymer;
- (c) an ink cup having a hollow interior and being defined by a horizontally disposed circular-shaped bottom surface in operative association with said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said circular-shaped bottom surface of the ink cup having a predetermined diameter less than the predetermined length of the image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the image pattern;
- (d) means for translation of the ink cup back and forth in a straight line lengthwise of said image pattern means on said top planar surface across the elongated image pattern while the image pattern is being flooded with ink;
- (e) an image transfer pad being operatively supported above the top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means;
- (f) means for movement of the image transfer pad in a straight line in a direction perpendicular to the lengthwise direction of translation of the ink cup; and
- (g) a support member being provided for supporting the bottom surface of said steel plate, a plurality of magnets being provided in said support member for holding the steel plate in contact with and flat against the support member.
- 32. Apparatus according to claim 31 wherein the support member is defined by linear front and back edges and said plurality of magnets are provided along said front and back edges.
- 33. Process for printing an elongated image having a predetermined length and width on an elongated substrate comprising the following steps:
- (a) providing a pad printer comprising an elongated transfer pad of predetermined length sufficient to transfer an elongated image pattern having a predetermined length and a predetermined width, the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern being greater than the predetermined width, said transfer pad being mounted so as to move vertically upwardly and downwardly and in a predetermined linear direction in a horizontal plane;
- (b) providing an elongated image pattern means on said pad printer, a top horizontally disposed planar surface being provided on said image pattern means, and an elongated image pattern being provided on said top planar surface having a predetermined length greater than a predetermined width, said elongated image pattern means being mounted to said pad printer so that said horizontally disposed planar surface is in a plane below and parallel to the horizontal plane in which the elongated image transfer pad travels;
- (c) providing an inverted ink cup having a closed top end and a horizontally disposed circular-shaped bottom end, said ink cup being operatively mounted to said elongated image pattern means, a hollow interior being defined by said ink cup and said bottom end being provided in operative association with said top planar surface of the elongated image pattern means, said circular-shaped bottom end of said ink cup having a predetermined diameter less than the predetermined length of the elongated image pattern but greater than the predetermined width of the elongated image pattern;
- (d) providing means in operative association with said ink cup for reciprocating said ink cup in a horizontal plane in a linear direction back and forth across said elongated image pattern whereby to fill said elongated image pattern with ink, the linear direction of travel of the ink cup defining a vertically disposed plane;
- (e) providing an elongated image transfer pad on said pad printer having a length sufficient to transfer said elongated image pattern to a substrate, said elongated image transfer pad being mounted to said pad printer so that the lengthwise direction of the elongated image pattern and lengthwise direction of the elongated image transfer pad are in parallel disposition to one another;
- (f) providing means in operative association with said elongated image transfer pad to move said elongated image transfer pad from a home position vertically downwardly to place said transfer pad in pressure contact with said elongated image pattern when filled with ink to pick up said elongated image pattern and vertically upwardly out of contact with said elongated image pattern to said home position, said upwardly and downwardly movements defining a vertical plane in perpendicular disposition to the vertical plane defined by the travel of said ink cup;
- (g) providing means for mounting an elongated substrate to be printed with an elongated image in operative association with said elongated image pattern and said elongated image transfer pad, said elongated substrate being defined by a lengthwise direction and being so mounted that the lengthwise direction of the elongated substrate is in parallel disposition to the lengthwise direction of said elongated image pattern;
- (h) moving the elongated image transfer pad having the elongated image pattern on the transfer pad forward in a horizontal plane to a predetermined position above the substrate to be printed;
- (i) causing the elongated image transfer pad to move vertically downwardly and in pressure contact with said elongated substrate whereby to transfer the elongated image pattern to said elongated substrate; and
- (j) causing the elongated image transfer pad to be raised vertically upwardly to said horizontal plane and then to be returned to said home position for another cycle of operation.
