Claims
- 1. A portable receiving device for receiving information modulated upon a transmitted signal, the portable receiving device comprising:
- a radio frequency receiver for receiving and demodulating the transmitted signal to produce a received signal having the information;
- a programmable computing device responsive to the received signal and having a first mode of operation associated with full computational capability and having a corresponding power drain from a battery, the first mode for at least determining a presence or absence of the information within the received signal,
- said programmable computing device having a second mode of operation associated with a substantially diminished computational capability and having a diminished power drain from the battery; and
- an energy conservation device for operating said programmable computing device in the first mode in order to determine the presence or absence of the information and for enabling said programmable computing device to operate in the second mode in response to said programmable computing device determining the absence of the information.
- 2. The portable receiving device according to claim 1 wherein the programmable computing device is a microcomputer.
- 3. The device according to claim 1 wherein the programmable computing device comprises:
- a read only memory (ROM) for storing a computational program which operates said programmable computing device, the computational program including a processing routine to determine the presence or absence of the information;
- an central processing unit (CPU) coupled to said ROM for operating the computational program at a first clock rate associated with full computational capability; and
- a timing circuit responsive to said energy conservation device for causing said CPU to operate at a second clock rate substantially lower than the first clock rate, thereby causing the CPU to have the substantially diminished computational capability with the diminished power drain from the battery.
- 4. The portable receiving device according to claim 3 wherein said programmable computing device has a clock coupled to said CPU for generating a predetermined clock rate, wherein said timing circuit generates the second clock rate to be substantially lower than the predetermined clock rate by periodically decoupling said clock from said CPU.
