- 142. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 140, wherein the address signal comprises a mobile identification number.
- 143. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 140, wherein the address signal is associated only with the transmitting and receiving device.
- 144. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 140, wherein the address signal is associated with a plurality of transmitting and receiving devices.
- 145. A transmitting and receiving device for communicating with a system, comprising:
- a receiver for receiving a selective call signal comprising a message identifier identifying a message that is stored in a storage unit, wherein the message is not included in the selective call signal regardless of the size of the message, and wherein the message identifier is also stored in the storage unit;
- a user interface for receiving from a user of the device a command to erase the message identifier from the storage unit;
- a processor for generating an erase signal in response to the user interface receiving the command, the erase signal indicating that the system should delete the message identifier from the storage unit; and
- a transmitter for transmitting the erase signal to the system.
- 146. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 145, wherein, upon receiving the erase signal, the system deletes the message identifier from the storage unit.
- 147. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 145, wherein the transmitter delays transmitting the erase signal until a call is in progress.
- 148. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 147, wherein the processor initiates a call after the user interface receives input from the user indicating that a call should be initiated.
- 149. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 145, wherein the selective call signal includes an address signal and, if the address signal is associated with the device, the processor generates an alert signal to alert the user that a message identifier has been received.
- 150. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 149, wherein the address signal comprises an address code.
- 151. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 149, wherein the address signal comprises a mobile identification number.
- 152. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 149, wherein the address signal is associated only with the transmitting and receiving device.
- 153. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 149, wherein the address signal is associated with a plurality of transmitting and receiving devices.
- 154. A transmitting and receiving device for transmitting and receiving information, comprising:
- a receiver for receiving a selective call signal including identification information identifying message information that is stored in a system, but not stored in the transmitting and receiving device;
- a memory for storing the received identification information;
- a user interface for receiving an erase command from a user of the device; and
- a processor that receives the command from the user interface and, in response to receiving the command, deletes the identification information from the memory.
- 155. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 154, wherein the selective call signal includes an address signal and, if the address signal is associated with the device, the processor generates an alert signal to alert the user that a identification information has been received.
- 156. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 155, wherein the address signal comprises an address code.
- 157. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 155, wherein the address signal comprises a mobile identification number.
- 158. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 155, wherein the address signal is associated only with the device.
- 159. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 155, wherein the address signal is associated with a plurality of transmitting and receiving devices.
- 160. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 154, wherein the user interface is also for receiving an retrieve message command from the user.
- 161. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 160, further comprising a transmitter for transmitting signal to the system.
- 162. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 161, wherein the processor receives the retrieve message command from the user interface after the user interface receives the retrieve command from the user, the processor, in response to receiving the retrieve message command, generates a retrieve signal, the transmitter transmits the retrieve signal to the system, the receiver receives the message information, and the processor stores the message information in the memory.
- 163. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 162, wherein the processor, in response to receiving the erase command, deletes the identification information from the memory but does not delete the message information from the memory.
- 164. The transmitting and receiving device of claim 162, wherein the processor generates a second alert signal after the receiver receives the message information, the second alert signal for informing the user that the message information has been received.
