Claims
- 1. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: alkylene carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the alkylene carbonate is propylene carbonate or ethylene carbonate.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the alkylene carbonate is propylene carbonate.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an alcohol.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight alkylene carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickener.
- 7. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickener, wherein the thickener is a cellulose thickener and is present in an amount up to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 further comprising an ether ester.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 further comprising an organic cosolvent.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 4 percent by weight.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 10 percent by weight.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 10 percent.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 where the alkylene carbonate is present in an amount of at least about 40 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 14. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 35 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is free of formic acid.
- 16. The composition of claim 1 in the absence of a lactone.
- 17. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition consists essentially of at least about 10 by weight propylene carbonate, from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dibasic ester, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 18. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition containing alkylene carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause blistering or bubbling of the paint.
- 19. The process of claim 18, wherein the composition includes an alcohol.
- 20. The process of claim 18, wherein the alkylene carbonate is propylene carbonate.
- 21. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: dialkyl carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water.
- 22. The composition of claim 21, wherein the dialkyl carbonate is dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, or mixtures thereof.
- 23. The composition of claim 21 in the form of a miscible solution.
- 24. The composition of claim 21, for comprising a glycol ether.
- 25. The composition of any of claims 21, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dialkyl carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 26. A miscible composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dimethyl carbonate or diethyl carbonate, from about 0 to about 90 percent by weight benzyl alcohol, from 0 to about 90 percent by weight dibasic ester, from 0 to about 90 percent by weight alkylene carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 27. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition containing dialkyl carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause the paint to separate from the surface.
- 28. The process of claim 27, wherein the dialkyl carbonate is dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, or mixtures thereof.
- 29. The process of claim 27 wherein the composition is in the form of a miscible solution.
- 30. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition further comprises a glycol ether.
- 31. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dialkyl carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 32. The process of claim 27 wherein the composition is a miscible composition comprising: from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dimethyl carbonate or diethyl carbonate, from about 0 to about 90 percent by weight benzyl alcohol, from 0 to about 90 percent by weight glycol ether, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 33. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising a miscible mixture of propylene carbonate, dibasic ester and an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution, wherein the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the solution is about 10 to about 50 percent by weight.
- 34. The composition of claim 33 further comprising an ether ester.
- 35. A composition useful as a paint remover, consisting of a miscible mixture of propylene carbonate, dibasic ester and an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution
- 36. A process for the production of a paint remover composition, comprising: combining (a) alkylene carbonate, dialkyl carbonate, or both and (b) an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution and (c) dibasic ester to form the composition.
- 37. A process for removing a coating from a surface, comprising:
providing a miscible composition of alkylene carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water; adding a thickening agent to the miscible composition and mixing the resulting composition to form a thickened composition; applying the thickened composition to a coated surface for a time sufficient and under conditions effective to separate at least a portion of the coating from the surface; and removing the coating and thickened composition from the surface.
- 38. The process of claim 37 wherein the coating is paint.
- 39. The process of claim 37 wherein the alkylene carbonate is propylene carbonate.
- 40. The process of claim 37 wherein the thickened composition contains about 10 to about 90 percent by weight propylene carbonate, about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 41. The process of claim 40 wherein the coating is paint.
- 42. The process of claim 41 wherein the surface is aluminum.
