Claims
- 1. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising benzyl alcohol, propylene carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, and water, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight propylene carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a second alcohol.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a polyvinyl pyrrolidone thickener.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickener, wherein the thickener is a cellulose thickener and is present in an amount up to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an ether ester.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an organic cosolvent.
- 7. The composition of claim 1, where the propylene carbonate is present in an amount of at least about 40 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 8. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is free of formic acid.
- 9. The composition of claim 1, in the absence of a lactone.
- 10. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition comprising benzyl alcohol, propylene, carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, and water to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause blistering or bubbling other paint.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition includes a second alcohol.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition contains from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight propylene carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 13. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition further comprises a polyvinyl pyrrolidone thickener.
- 14. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition further comprises a thickener, wherein the thickener is a cellulose thickener and is present in an amount up to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 15. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition further comprises an ether ester.
- 16. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition further comprises an organic cosolvent.
- 17. The process of claim 10, wherein the propylene carbonate is present in an amount of at least about 40 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 18. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition is free of formic acid.
- 19. The process of claim 10, wherein the composition is free a lactone.
- 20. A composition according to claim 1 with the proviso that the composition does not contain ethylene carbonate and does not contain an ester.
- 21. The composition of claim 20, further comprising a polyvinyl pyrrolidone thickener.
- 22. The composition of claim 20, further comprising a thickener, wherein the thickener is a cellulose thickener and is present in an amount up to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 23. The composition of claim 20, further comprising an organic cosolvent.
- 24. The composition of claim 20, where the propylene carbonate is present in an amount of at least about 40 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 25. The composition of claim 20, wherein the composition is free of formic acid.
- 26. The composition of claim 20 in the absence of a lactone.
- 27. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition according to claim 1 to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause the paint to separate from the surface, with the proviso that the composition does not contain ethylene carbonate and does not contain an ester.
- 28. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition further comprises a polyvinyl pyrrolidone thickener.
- 29. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition further comprises a thickener, wherein the thickener is a cellulose thickener and is present in an amount up to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 30. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition further comprises an organic cosolvent.
- 31. The process of claim 27, where the propylene carbonate is present in an amount of at least about 40 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 32. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition is free of formic acid.
- 33. The process of claim 27, wherein the composition is free of a lactone.
