Claims
- 1. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: dialkyl carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water, wherein the composition comprises about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dialkyl carbonate, about 0.1 to 90 percent by weight dibasic ester, about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and about 0.1 to about 30 percent water are present in the composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the dialkyl carbonate is dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, or mixtures thereof.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 in the form of a miscible solution.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a glycol ether.
- 5. A miscible composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dimethyl carbonate or diethyl carbonate, from about 0 to about 90 percent by weight benzyl alcohol, from 0.1 to about 90 percent by weight dibasic ester, from 0 to about 90 percent by weight alkylene carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 6. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition containing dialkyl carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause the paint to separate from the surface, wherein about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dialkyl carbonate, about 0.1 to 90 percent by weight dibasic ester, about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and about 0.1 to about 30 percent water are present in the composition.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein the dialkyl carbonate is dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, or mixtures thereof.
- 8. The process of claim 6 wherein the composition is in the form of a miscible solution.
- 9. The process of claim 6, wherein the composition further comprises a glycol ether.
- 10. The process of claim 6 wherein the composition is a miscible composition comprising: from about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dimethyl carbonate or diethyl carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 90 percent by weight of dibasic ester, from about 0 to about 90 percent by weight benzyl alcohol, from 0 to about 90 percent by weight glycol ether, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 11. A process for the production of a paint remover composition, comprising: combining (a) a dialkyl carbonate or both the dialkyl carbonate and an alkylene carbonate and (b) an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution and (c) dibasic ester to form the composition, wherein the composition comprises about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dialkyl carbonate or both dialkyl carbonate and alkylene carbonate, about 0.1 to about 90 percent by weight of dibasic ester, about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 12. A process for removing a coating from a surface, comprising:providing a miscible composition of dialkyl carbonate, dibasic ester, hydrogen peroxide, and water, wherein the miscible composition includes at least about 10% by weight of the dialkyl carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 90 percent by weight of the dibasic ester, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight of the hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent of the water; adding a thickening agent to the miscible composition and mixing the resulting composition to form a thickened composition; applying the thickened composition to a coated surface for a time sufficient and under conditions effective to separate at least a portion of the coating from the surface; and removing the coating and thickened composition from the surface.
- 13. The process of claim 12 wherein the coating is paint.
- 14. The process of claim 12 wherein the dialkyl carbonate is dimethyl carbonate or diethyl carbonate.
- 15. The process of claim 12 wherein the thickened composition contains about 10 to about 90 percent by weight dialkyl carbonate, about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein the coating is paint.
- 17. The process of claim 16 wherein the surface is aluminum.
- 18. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickening agent.
- 19. The composition of claim 5, further comprising a thickening agent.
- 20. The process of claim 6, wherein the composition further comprises a thickening agent.
- 21. The process of claim 11, further comprising combining a thickening agent to form the composition.
