Claims
- 1. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising: propylene carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, and water, wherein the amount of propylene carbonate is more than 50 percent by weight of the composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, further comprising an alcohol.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition contains up to about 90 percent by weight of propylene carbonate, from about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and from about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickener.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a thickener, wherein the thickener is a cellulose thickener and is present in an amount up to about 10 percent by weight of the composition.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 in the absence of an ester.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 further comprising an organic cosolvent.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 4 percent by weight.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 10 percent by weight.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen peroxide is present in an amount of at least about 35 percent by weight of the total composition.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is free of formic acid.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 in the absence of an ester.
- 13. A process for removing paint, comprising: applying a composition containing propylene carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, and water to a painted surface for a time and under conditions effective to cause blistering or bubbling of the paint, wherein the amount of propylene carbonate is greater than 50 percent by weight.
- 14. The process of claim 13, wherein the composition includes an alcohol.
- 15. A composition useful as a paint remover, comprising a miscible mixture of propylene carbonate and an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution, wherein the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the solution is about 10 to about 50 percent by weight, wherein the amount of propylene carbonate is greater than 50 percent by weight.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 in the absence of an ester.
- 17. A process for removing a coating from a surface, comprising:
- providing a miscible composition of tropylene carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, and water, wherein the amount of propylene carbonate is greater than 50 percent by weight;
- adding a thickening agent to the miscible composition and mixing the resulting composition to form a thickened composition;
- applying the thickened composition to a coated surface for a time sufficient and under conditions effective to separate at least a portion of the coating from the surface; and removing the coating and thickened composition from the surface.
- 18. The process of claim 17 wherein the coating is paint.
- 19. The process of claim 17 wherein the thickened composition contains up to about 90 percent by weight propylene carbonate, about 0.1 to about 20 percent by weight hydrogen peroxide, and about 0.1 to about 30 percent water.
- 20. The process of claim 19 wherein the coating is paint.
- 21. The process of claim 20 wherein the surface is aluminum.
