- 2. The air compressor of claim 1 wherein the internal diameter of the tube is increased by a factor of at least 2.
- 3. The air compressor of claim 1 wherein the internal diameter of the tube is increased by a factor of at least 3.
- 4. The air compressor of claim 1 wherein the internal diameter of the tube is increased in step-wise fashion.
- 5. The air compressor of claim 4 wherein the internal diameter of the tube is increased in at least two separate steps.
- 6. The air compressor of claim 1 wherein the internal diameter of the tube is continuously increased along the length of the tube in a gradual fashion.
- 7. The air compressor of claim 1 further comprising a segregation enclosure for the air compressor wherein (i) the primary air intake port communicates with external air through a first hole in the segregation enclosure, (ii) the distal end of the tube extends through a second hole in the segregation enclosure for externally discharging vented air, and (iii) the first and second holes are remotely positioned relative to one another for preventing the immediate reintroduction of vented air into the air compressor through the primary air intake port.
- 8. A quieted air compressor comprising:
- (a) a main housing divided into a lower compartment, an intermediate compartment, and an upper compartment wherein a first partition divides the lower and intermediate compartments and a second partition divides the intermediate and upper compartments,
- (b) an air compressor within the intermediate compartment including, (i) a motor retained within a motor housing, and (ii) a compression fan driven by the motor and located at a proximal end thereof within a compression chamber defined by a pressurizing enclosure; the pressurizing enclosure having a primary air intake port in fluid communication with the lower compartment through a first hole in the first partition and an air discharge port;
- (c) a conduit in fluid communication with the air discharge port in the pressurizing enclosure which extends through a second hole in the main housing for directing the flow of pressurized air outside the main housing; the conduit having a venting port through a sidewall for continuously venting pressurized air from the conduit during operation of the compressor which venting port is located within the intermediate compartment of the main housing,
- (d) a tube having a proximal end in sealed fluid communication with the venting port through the conduit and a distal end in sealed fluid communication with the lower compartment of the main housing through a third hole in the first partition for directing the flow of vented pressurized air from the conduit into the lower compartment of the main housing; the tube having an increasing internal diameter from the proximal to the distal end such that the internal diameter of the tube at the distal end is at least 1.5 times larger than the diameter of the venting port.
- 9. The air compressor of claim 8 wherein (i) the motor housing includes a remote end with cooling air intake vents and a sidewall with cooling air discharge vents, (ii) the cooling air intake vents at the remote end of the motor housing are in fluid communication with the upper compartment of the main housing through a fourth hole in the second partition, (iii) the cooling air discharge vents in the sidewall of the motor housing are in fluid communication with the intermediate compartment of the main housing, and (iv) the air compressor further comprises a cooling fan within the motor housing for producing an air flow from the upper compartment of the main housing, through the cooling air intake vents in the motor housing, around the motor retained within the motor housing, out the cooling air discharge vents, and into the intermediate compartment of the main housing.
- 10. The air compressor of claim 9 wherein (i) the motor housing and the fourth hole are sized and positioned to provide an annular gap around the motor housing so that the motor housing does not physically contact the second partition, and (ii) a resilient gasket is positioned over the annular gap for sealing the gap to air flow without transmitting substantial vibrational movement from the motor housing to the second partition.
- 11. The air compressor of claim 10 wherein the gasket is a closed cell foam.
- 12. The air compressor of claim 8 further comprising a silencer for the primary air intake port of the air compressor; the silencer retained within the lower compartment of the main housing and comprising:
- (a) a housing defining a silencing chamber and including a sound absorbent material,
- (b) an inlet orifice through the housing,
- (c) an outlet orifice through the housing in fluid communication with the primary air intake port in the pressurizing enclosure through the first hole in the first partition, and
- (d) a baffle positioned within the silencing chamber forming a circuitous path within the silencing chamber from the inlet orifice to the outlet orifice; the baffle including a sound absorbent material.
- 13. The air compressor of claim 12 wherein the lower compartment is divided into a front portion and a rear portion by a divider wall with the third hole in fluid communication with the front half of the lower compartment and the inlet orifice in the silencer housing in fluid communication with the rear half of the lower compartment.
