A palletizer as set forth in claim 1 wherein said pallet hoist includes a frame having an upper portion, wherein said pallet lift mechanism has a staging position adjacent said upper portion of said frame, and wherein, when said pallet lift mechanism is in said staging position, said pallet support member is above said upper portion so that the pallet supported by said pallet support member is spaced above said upper portion of said frame.
- 10. A palletizer for stacking a series of items on a pallet, said palletizer comprising:
a pallet hoist for supporting a stack of pallets therein; a top frame dispenser for supporting a supply of top frames; and a carriage for moving pallets and top frames from said pallet hoist and said top frame dispenser, respectively, said carriage including an upper surface, a pallet support mounted on the upper surface to support a pallet thereon, a lower surface, a clamp mounted on said lower surface and a clamp actuator connected to said clamp.
- 11. A palletizer as set forth in claim 10 wherein said clamp actuator causes movement of said clamp to secure a top frame in said clamp.
- 12. A palletizer as set forth in claim 10 wherein the top frames have lateral edges and wherein said clamps are engagable with the lateral edges of the upper most top frame supported by the top frame dispenser.
- 13. A palletizer as set forth in claim 10 wherein said pallet support includes first and second pallet support members.
- 14. A palletizer as set forth in claim 10 wherein said palletizer includes a pair of spaced rails and said carriage includes opposite side portions having a respective roller mounted on said side portions for connection to a respective one of said rails so that said carrier is moveable in a horizontal direction between said top frame dispenser and said pallet hoist.
- 15. A palletizer as set forth in claim 10 wherein said clamp includes opposing clamp members adapted to move together in unison so as to engage and release, respectively, a top frame.
- 16. A palletizer as set forth in claim 10 wherein said top frame dispenser includes a lift assembly for indexing the supply of top frames upwardly to position the uppermost top frame between said clamp members.
- 17. A palletizer for stacking a series of items on a pallet, said palletizer comprising:
a pallet hoist for supporting a stack of pallets therein; a pallet lift mechanism mounted for vertical movement within said pallet hoist adjacent to and relative to the stack of pallets, said pallet lift assembly including a pair of spaced, opposed pallet support members mounted on said pallet lift assembly for movement between a retracted position wherein there is clearance between the pallet support member and the stack of pallets, and an extended position wherein said pallet support member is in an interference position relative to said stack of pallets; a top frame dispenser for supporting a supply of top frames; and a carriage for moving pallets and top frames from said pallet hoist and said top frame dispenser, respectively, said carriage including a carrier having an upper surface, a pallet support mounted on the upper surface to support a pallet thereon, a lower surface, a clamp mounted on said lower surface and a clamp actuator connected to said clamp; and wherein said carrier has a width that is less than the distance between said spaced pallet support members.
- 18. A palletizer as set forth in claim 17 and further comprising a moveable support for moving a stack of pallets into said pallet hoist.
- 19. A palletizer as set forth in claim 17 wherein said pallet lift mechanism includes a pallet position sensor for detecting the position of said pallet lift assembly relative to the stack of pallets.
- 20. A palletizer as set forth in claim 19 wherein said pallet position sensor is an optical sensor.
- 21. A palletizer as set forth in claim 17 wherein said clamp actuator causes movement of said clamp to secure a top frame in said clamp.
- 22. A palletizer as set forth in claim 17 wherein the top frames have lateral edges and wherein said clamps are engagable with the lateral edges of the upper most top frame supported by the top frame dispenser.
- 23. A palletizer as set forth in claim 17 wherein said palletizer includes a pair of spaced rails and said carriage includes opposite side portions having a respective roller mounted on said side portions for connection to a respective one of said rails so that said carrier is moveable in a horizontal direction between said top frame dispenser and said pallet hoist.
- 24. A palletizer as set forth in claim 17 wherein said top frame dispenser includes a lift assembly for indexing the supply of top frames upwardly to position the uppermost top frame between said clamp members.
- 25. In a palletizer having a top frame dispenser, a pallet hoist, a main hoist, and a carriage having a carrier mounted for movement between the top frame dispenser, the pallet hoist and the main hoist, a method of stacking items on a pallet and placing a top frame on top of the stack of items, said method comprising:
(A) positioning the carrier above the top frame dispenser; (B) picking up a top frame with the carrier; (C) raising a pallet above the pallet hoist; (D) positioning the carrier above the pallet hoist and below the pallet; and (E) lowering the pallet so that the pallet rests on the carrier.
- 26. A method as set forth in claim 25 and further comprising the steps of:
(F) positioning the carrier above the main hoist; (G) releasing the top frame so that the top frame drops onto a completed stack of items; (H) moving the stack of items from the main hoist; (I) removing the pallet from the carrier to a position within the main hoist; and (J) removing the carrier from the position above the main hoist.
