Claims
- 1. A linear induction machine comprising:
- a plurality of radially spaced cylindrical shuttles;
- a plurality of radially spaced cylindrical stators interstitially disposed with said shuttles;
- a plurality of magnetically isolated magnetic teeth on each of said shuttles and said stators, the plurality of magnetically isolated magnetic teeth on each said shuttle being different in pitch from the plurality of magnetically isolated magnetic teeth on each said stator;
- return means including magnetic material for establishing a low reluctance axial flux path;
- a plurality of conductor paths associated with said teeth on each said shuttle; and
- a plurality of electrical windings on each stator, each winding associated with a different group of magnetic teeth for inducing a magnetic flux radially in a path in series through corresponding groups of teeth on successive shuttles and stators and returning axially through said return means.
- 2. The linear induction machine of claim 1 in which said magnetic teeth are imbedded in the cylindrical stators and shuttles.
- 3. The linear induction machine of claim 1 in which said magnetic teeth are laminated.
- 4. The linear induction machine of claim 1 in which said shuttles are made of non-magnetic material.
- 5. The linear induction machine of claim 1 in which said stators are made of non-magnetic, non-conducting material.
- 6. The linear induction machine of claim 1 in which said shuttle is made of conducting material for establishing said conductor paths.
- 7. The linear induction machine of claim 1 in which said electrical windings are integral with each said stator.
- 8. A permanent magnet linear synchronous machine comprising:
- a plurality of radially spaced, radially magnetized shuttles each having a plurality of poles;
- a plurality of radially spaced stators interstitially disposed with said shuttles; each said stator including a plurality of magnetically isolated magnetic teeth;
- return means including magnetic material for establishing a low reluctance axial flux path; and
- a plurality of electrical windings on each stator, each winding associated with a different group of magnetic teeth;
- each said pole of each said shuttle inducing a magnetic flux radially in a path in series through corresponding groups of teeth on each stator and a magnetic pole on each shuttle and returning axially through said return means.
- 9. The permanent magnetic linear synchronous actuator of claim 8 in which said shuttles and stators are cylinders.
- 10. The permanent magnetic linear synchronous actuator of claim 8 in which said magnetic teeth are imbedded in the cylinders.
- 11. The permanent magnetic linear synchronous actuator of claim 8 in which said magnetic teeth are laminated.
- 12. The permanent magnetic linear synchronous actuator of claim 8 in which said stators are made of non-magnetic, non-conducting material.
- 13. The permanent magnet linear synchronous actuator of claim 8 in which said electrical windings are integral with each said stator.
- 14. An a.c. linear electrical machine comprising:
- a plurality of radially spaced shuttles;
- a plurality of radially spaced stators interstitially disposed with said shuttles;
- a plurality of magnetically isolated magnetic teeth on each of said stators;
- a plurality of electrical windings on each stator, each winding associated with a different group of magnetic teeth; and
- return means including magnetic material for establishing a magnetic flux path radially in series through corresponding groups of teeth on successive stators, and interstitial shuttles, and axially in said return means.
- 15. The a.c. linear electrical machine of claim 14 in which said machine is a linear induction machine, said shuttles each include a plurality of magnetic teeth, the pitch of the teeth on each shuttle being different from that on each stator, and there are a plurality of conductor paths surrounding said teeth on each said shuttle.
- 16. The a.c. linear electrical machine of claim 14 in which said machine is a permanent magnet linear synchronous machine, said shuttles are multipole and radially magnetized, and each pole of each said multipole shuttle induces a magnetic flux radially in said magnetic flux path in series through corresponding groups of teeth on successive stators and the poles of the interstitial shuttles.
- 17. An a.c. electrical linear machine comprising:
- a plurality of stators spaced from each other, each including a plurality of magnetically isolated magnetic teeth;
- a plurality of shuttles spaced from each other and interstitially disposed with said stators;
- a plurality of electrical windings on each of said stators, each winding associated with a different group of said magnetically isolated magnetic teeth for providing a current flow in a circumferential direction; and
- return means for completing a magnetic flux path in a radial direction perpendicular to said circumferential direction through corresponding groups of said teeth on successive said stators and through said shuttles for generating a force in an axial mutually perpendicular direction between said stators and said shuttles.
