Claims
- 1. An improved overhead storage apparatus for protecting particulate material from the surrounding outside environment during the transfer of the material from the overhead storage assembly adapted for use with a vehicle having a storage bin formed therein, at least one hatch door with each hatch door being connected to the vehicle and positioned so that the hatch doors cover the storage bin formed in the vehicle in a closed first position of the hatch doors, the hatch doors each being movable from the storage bin in the vehicle to an opened second position, the overhead storage assembly comprising:
- a loading chute having a lower end and a channel extending therethrough, the channel being in communication with the storage assembly for transferring the particulate material from the storage assembly through the channel in the loading chute;
- a temporary cover having an upper surface, a lower surface, a first end, an opposed second end, a first side and an opposed second side, the temporary cover being connected to the lower end of the loading chute with the channel of the loading chute extending through the temporary cover, at least a portion of the temporary cover being positionable between the storage bin of the vehicle and the hatch door prior to the hatch door being moved from the closed first position to the opened second position, the temporary cover being positioned over and covering a portion of the storage bin of the vehicle covered by the hatch door in the closed first position of the hatch door thereby covering the storage bin of the vehicle prior to the hatch door being moved to the opened second position, the particulate material being transferrable from the overhead storage bin to the storage bin of the vehicle via the channel in the chute while the temporary cover covers the storage bin of the vehicle; and
- means operatively associated with the temporary cover for moving the hatch door from the closed first position to the opened second position after the temporary cover has been positioned over and covering a portion of the storage bin of the vehicle covered by the hatch door in the closed first position of the hatch door.
- 2. An improved overhead storage apparatus for protecting particulate material from the surrounding outside environment during the transfer of the material from the overhead storage assembly adapted for use with a vehicle having a storage bin formed therein, at least one hatch door with each hatch door being connected to the vehicle and positioned so that the hatch doors cover the storage bin formed in the vehicle in a closed first position of the hatch doors, the hatch doors each being movable from the storage bin in the vehicle to an opened second position, the overhead storage assembly comprising: the vehicle to an opened second position, the overhead storage assembly comprising:
- a loading chute having a lower end and a channel extending therethrough, the channel being in communication with the storage assembly for transferring the particulate material from the storage assembly through the channel in the loading chute;
- a temporary cover having an upper surface, a lower surface, a first end, an opposed second end, a first side and an opposed second side, the temporary cover being connected to the lower end of the loading chute with the channel of the loading chute extending through the temporary cover, at least a portion of the temporary cover being positionable between the storage bin of the vehicle and the hatch door prior to the hatch door being moved from the closed first position to the opened second position, the temporary cover being positioned over and covering a portion of the storage bin of the vehicle covered by the hatch door in the closed first position of the hatch door thereby covering the storage bin of the vehicle prior to the hatch door being moved to the opened second position, the particulate material being transferrable from the overhead storage bin to the storage bin of the vehicle via the channel in the chute while the temporary cover covers the storage bin of the vehicle; and
- a load control assembly, comprising:
- a support member having a first end and an opposed second end;
- a pivot arm having a first end and an opposed second end, the first end of the pivot arm being positionably connected to the opposed second end of the support member so that the pivot arm extends away from the lower second end of the support member;
- a follower wheel operatively connected to the second end of the end of the pivot arm, the follower wheel being positioned in engaging alignment with a portion of the vehicle; and
- a spring having a first end and a second end, the first end of the spring being connected to the support member at a position above the pivotable attachment of the opposed second end of the support member to the first end of the pivot arm, the second end of the spring being connected to the pivot arm at a position substantially intermediate the first end of the second end of the pivot arm, the pivot arm having a lower first position and a raised second position, the support member, the pivot arm, the follower wheel and the spring cooperating to provide a means for indicating when the vehicle is positioned with respect to the loading chute for receiving particulate material.
- 3. An improved overhead storage apparatus for protecting particulate material from the surrounding outside environment during the transfer of the material from the overhead storage assembly adapted for use with a vehicle having a storage bin formed therein, at least one hatch door with each hatch door being connected to the vehicle and positioned so that the hatch doors cover the storage bin formed in the vehicle in a closed first position of the hatch doors, the hatch doors each being movable from the storage bin in the vehicle to an opened second position, the overhead storage assembly comprising:
- a loading chute having a lower end and a channel extending therethrough, the channel being in communication with the storage assembly for transferring the particulate material from the storage assembly through the channel in the loading chute;
- a temporary cover having an upper surface, a lower surface, a first end, an opposed second end, a first side and an opposed second side, the temporary cover being connected to the lower end of the loading chute with the channel of the loading chute extending through the temporary cover, at least a portion of the temporary cover being positionable between the storage bin of the vehicle and the hatch door prior to the hatch door being moved from the closed first position to the opened second position, the temporary cover being positioned over and covering a portion of the storage bin of the vehicle covered by the hatch door in the closed first position of the hatch door thereby covering the storage bin of the vehicle prior to the hatch door being moved to the opened second position, the particulate material being transferrable from the overhead storage bin to the storage bin of the vehicle via the channel in the chute while the temporary cover covers the storage bin of the vehicle; and
- an unlatching assembly for moving the hatch door assembly from the first closed position to the unlocked second position, the unlatching assembly comprising:
- a brace supportive frame operatively connected to the cover near a medial portion of the first side of the cover so that a portion of the frame extends outwardly and away from the first side of the cover and is maintained therein in a cantilever manner;
- an extension arm secured to and extending away from the cantilevered portion of the frame, the extension arm being maintained in a parallel spaced apart relationship with the first side of the cover and extending towards the first end of the cover; and
- a latch positioning wheel operatively connected to the extension arm at a predetermined position near the first end of the cover.
- 4. An improved overhead storage apparatus for protecting particulate material from the surrounding outside environment during the transfer of the material from the overhead storage assembly adapted for use with a vehicle having a storage bin formed therein, at least one hatch door with each hatch door being connected to the vehicle and positioned so that the hatch doors cover the storage bin formed in the vehicle in a closed first position of the hatch doors, the hatch doors each being movable from the storage bin in the vehicle to an opened second position, the overhead storage assembly comprising:
- a loading chute having a lower end and a channel extending therethrough, the channel being in communication with the storage assembly for transferring the particulate material from the storage assembly through the channel in the loading chute;
- a temporary cover having an upper surface, a lower surface, a first end, an opposed second end, a first side and an opposed second side, the temporary cover being connected to the lower end of the loading chute with the channel of the loading chute extending through the temporary cover, at least a portion of the temporary cover being positionable between the storage bin of the vehicle and the hatch door prior to the hatch door being moved from the closed first position to the opened second position, the temporary cover being positioned over and covering a portion of the storage bin of the vehicle covered by the hatch door in the closed first position of the hatch door thereby covering the storage bin of the vehicle prior to the hatch door being moved to the opened second position, the particulate material being transferrable from the overhead storage bin to the storage bin of the vehicle via the channel in the chute while the temporary cover covers the storage bin of the vehicle; and
- a hatch door guide assembly comprising:
- a supportive frame having a first end, a second end, an outer face, the first end of the frame being connected to the upper surface of the cover and the loading chute, the second end of the frame being connected to the upper surface of the cover and the loading chute, so that the supporting frame extends upwardly in a curved manner between the first and second ends of the frame so as to facilitate and to be compatible with the opening and closing of the hatch doors; and
- a plurality of roller assemblies, the roller assemblies including:
- a plurality of support plates; and
- a plurality of roller wheels; the support plates being secured in a parallel, spaced apart relationship to the outer face of the support frame and the roller wheels being positioned between and operatively connected to the support plates.
- 5. The improved storage apparatus of claim 4 which further includes a hatch door positioning rail having an outwardly curved first end, an inwardly curved second end, and a relatively straight horizontally disposed medial portion extending between the first and second ends, the hatch door positioning rail being supported in a stationary position a distance above the relatching cover and a distance from the second side face of the loading chute by a plurality of rigid strut members secured to the loading chute.
- 6. The improved storage apparatus of claim 5 which further includes a latching assembly operatively connected to the second end of the cover, the relatching assembly comprising:
- a frame connected to the upper face of the cover adjacent the first side of the cover so that a portion of the frame extends from the first side of the cover in a substantially cantilever manner;
- an extension arm having a first end and a second end, the first end of the extension arm being secured to the cantilever portion of the frame so that the arm extends in a parallel, spaced apart relationship with the first side of the cover in a direction toward the second end of the cover; and
- a latch positioning wheel operatively connected to the extension arm near the end of the extension arm opposite the frame, the wheel being positionable for engaging a portion of the vehicle.
- 7. The improved storage apparatus of claim 6 wherein the cover further includes:
- a first cover seal operatively connected to the first side of the temporary cover; and
- a second cover seal operatively connected to the opposed second side of the temporary cover, the first and second cover seals extending the length of the temporary cover between the first end and the opposed second end of the temporary cover, and adapted for slidable, sealing engagement with the vehicle when the temporary cover is positioned over the storage bin in the vehicle.
