Claims
- 1. A process for opacifying and extending a matrix wherein said matrix can be selected from the group consisting of aqueous emulsions, poly(styrene-butadiene) latex polymer coatings, polymethylmethacrylate latex polymer coatings, vinyl acetate latex polymer coatings, ethyl acrylate latex polymer coatings, butyl acrylate latex polymer coatings and methyl acrylate latex polymer coatings comprising dispersing substantially colorless colloidal sulfur particles having a size in the range of from about 0.01 .mu.m to about 1.00 .mu.m in the matrix in an amount in the range of from about 1% to about 40% by volume of the matrix to result in an overall colorless opacified and extended matrix.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the sulfur particles are characterized by a refractive index in the range of from about 1.9 to about 2.4.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the sulfur particles are mainly in the amorphous (.gamma.) phase.
- 4. The process of claim 1 which is further characterized to include the step of adding a biocide to protect the sulfur particles from attack by biological organisms.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the biocide is a transition metal sulfide.
- 6. The process of claim 1 which is further characterized to include the step of adding an anti-oxidant to protect the sulfur particles from oxidation.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein the anti-oxidant is a silica coating.
- 8. The process of claim 1 which is further characterized to include the step of adding a surfactant to aid in dispersing the particles in an aqueous matrix.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein the surfactant is a surfactant selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated compounds, carboxylates, sulfonates and sulfates, polyglycol ethers, amines, salts of acrylic acid, pyrophosphates, and cetyl pyridinium chloride.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein the matrix is a water-borne emulsion including a polymer component and water.
- 11. The process of claim 1 wherein the matrix is a coating including a polymer component.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein said coating is characterized by a refractive index in the range of from about 1.2 to about 1.7.
- 13. An opacified and extended composition comprising:
- a matrix wherein said matrix can be selected from the group consisting of aqueous emulsions, poly(styrene-butadiene) latex polymer, polymethylmethacrylate latex polymer, vinyl acetate latex polymer, ethyl acrylate latex polymer, butyl acrylate latex polymer and methyl acrylate latex polymer; and
- colloidal sulfur particles having an overall colorless appearance dispersed in the matrix.
- 14. The composition of claim 13 wherein the matrix is a water-borne emulsion including a polymer component and water.
- 15. The composition of claim 13 wherein the matrix is a coating including a polymer component.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 wherein the coating is characterized by a refractive index in the range of from about 1.2 to about 1.7.
- 17. The composition of claim 15 wherein the sulfur particles are dispersed in the coating in an amount in the range of from about 1% to about 40% by volume of the coating.
- 18. The composition of claim 13 wherein the sulfur particles are characterized by a refractive index in the range of from about 1.9 to about 2.4.
- 19. The composition of claim 13 wherein the sulfur particles are mainly in the amorphous (.gamma.) phase.
- 20. The composition of claim 13 wherein the sulfur particle colloidal size is selected to scatter light in the visible region of the spectrum resulting in a substantially colorless opacified and extended matrix.
- 21. The composition of claim 13 wherein the colloidal sulfur particles range in size from about 0.10 to about 1.0 .mu.m.
- 22. The composition of claim 13 wherein the composition further includes a biocide to protect the sulfur particles from attack by a biological organism.
- 23. The composition of claim 22 wherein the biocide is a transition metal sulfide.
- 24. The composition of claim 13 wherein the composition further includes an anti-oxidant to protect the sulfur particles from oxidation.
- 25. The composition of claim 24 wherein the anti-oxidant is a silica coating.
- 26. The composition of claim 13 wherein the composition is further characterized to include a surfactant to aid in dispersing the particles in an aqueous matrix.
- 27. The composition of claim 26 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated compounds, carboxylates, sulfonates and sulfates, polyglycol ethers, amines, salts of acrylic acid, pyrophosphates, and cetyl pyridinium chloride.
