Claims
- 1. A metal oxide coating comprising a film formed of a metal oxide and having a nanotextured surface defined by a plurality of capillary openings on the surface of said film, each of said capillary openings having a diameter determined by a predefined organic macromolecule that forms a spherical micelle of less than about 10 nanometers.
- 2. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide.
- 3. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said predefined organic macromolecule is formed of amphiphilic molecules.
- 4. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 3, wherein said amphiphilic molecules are molecules of a fatty acid.
- 5. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said coating is deposited on a metallic substrate.
- 6. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 5, wherein said metallic substrate is aluminum.
- 7. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said coating has a hydrophilic surface whereby water droplets deposited on said coating have a contact angle of less than 10 degrees.
- 8. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said coating has an oleophilic surface whereby oil droplets deposited on said coating have a contact angle of less than 10 degrees.
- 9. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said plurality of capillary openings on the surface of said film are arranged in a uniform pattern.
- 10. A metal oxide coating, comprising:
a thin film formed of a metal oxide and having a nanotextured surface defined by a plurality of capillary openings on the thin film, wherein the thickness of the metal oxide film is substantially equal to the diameter of the capillary openings.
- 11. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 10, wherein said metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide.
- 12. The metal oxide coating as set forth in claim 10, wherein said diameter of said capillary openings is less than about 10 nanometers.
- 13. The metal oxide coating as set forth in claim 10, wherein said diameter of said capillary openings is about 3 nanometers or less.
- 14. The metal oxide coating as set forth in claim 10, wherein said coating has a hydrophilic surface whereby water droplets deposited on said coating have a contact angle of less than 10 degrees.
- 15. The metal oxide coating as set forth in claim 10, wherein said coating has an oleophilic surface whereby oil droplets deposited on said coating have a contact angle of less than 10 degrees.
- 16. The metal oxide coating as set forth in claim 10, wherein said metal oxide coating includes a plurality of thin films formed of metal oxide, wherein at least one of such thin films having a nanotextured surface defined by a plurality of capillary openings on said thin film and wherein the thickness of said thin film is substantially equal to the diameter of the capillary openings in said thin film.
- 17. The metal oxide coating, as set forth in claim 10, wherein said plurality of capillary openings on the surface of said film are arranged in a uniform pattern.
- 18. A metal oxide coated article comprising:
a substrate; a thin film metal oxide coating having a nanotextured surface defining a plurality of capillary openings on said thin film metal oxide coating, wherein the thickness of said thin film metal oxide coating is substantially equal to the diameter of the capillary openings.
- 19. A metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said substrate is a metallic substrate.
- 20. A metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said substrate is aluminum.
- 21. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide.
- 22. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said diameter of said capillary openings is less than about 10 nanometers.
- 23. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said diameter of said capillary openings is about 3 nanometers or less.
- 24. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said coating has a hydrophilic surface whereby water droplets deposited on said coating have a contact angle of less than 10 degrees.
- 25. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said coating has an oleophilic surface whereby oil droplets deposited on said coating have a contact angle of less than 10 degrees.
- 26. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, further including a plurality of metal oxide thin film monolayers.
- 27. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said coated article is a heat exchanger componentry.
- 28. The metal oxide coated article as set forth in claim 18, wherein said plurality of capillary openings on the surface of said film are arranged in a uniform pattern.
