Claims
- 1. A system for packaging product into a receptacle having a plurality of closure flaps, comprising:a) a matrix former comprising a base portion, a back side and first and second lateral sides, said first and second lateral sides being movable with respect to said base portion, said matrix former pivotal about a first axis between a first upright position and a second inverted position; and b) a case rollover mechanism operably associated with said matrix former, said case rollover mechanism rotating a receptacle about said first axis from a first open orientation to a second orientation positioned about said matrix former and rotating said matrix former and the receptacle to said first orientation for thereby inverting said matrix former and causing the product received in said matrix former to be received in the receptacle.
- 2. The packaging system of claim 1, further comprising:a) a flap opening mechanism for opening a plurality of the flaps and securing the receptacle in the case rollover mechanism.
- 3. A system for packaging product according to claim 1, wherein said case rollover mechanism comprises a support and at least one holder for holding a carton on said support.
- 4. The packaging system of claim 1, wherein:a) said matrix former is pivotal substantially 180° between said first upright position and said second inverted position.
- 5. The packaging system of claim 4, wherein:a) said case rollover mechanism is rotatable substantially 180° from said first orientation to said second orientation, said case rollover mechanism is rotatable about an axis common to said matrix former and about which said matrix rotates.
- 6. A system for packaging a plurality of stacks of product into a case, comprising:a first support comprising a first surface for receiving a plurality of stacks of product, a rear wall, and first and second sidewalls, at least one of said first and second sidewalls being movable relative to said first surface, said first support being pivotable about a first axis; a second support comprising a first surface for receiving a case having an opening and at least one holder for securing a case to said first surface, said second support being pivotable about said first axis between a first position wherein the opening of the case faces away from said first support and a second position wherein the opening of the case faces toward said first support.
- 7. The system of claim 6 including an actuator operably connected to said first and second supports, said actuator being operable to pivot said first support about said first axis independently of said second support, to pivot said second support about said first axis independently of said first support, and to pivot said first support concurrently with said first support about said first axis.
- 8. The system of claim 6 wherein said first and second sidewalls are received within a carton secured to said second surface when said second support is in said second position.
- 9. The system of claim 6 including a first actuator operably connected to said first and second sidewalls for moving said first and second sidewalls toward and away from one another.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein said first actuator is mounted to said first support on a side opposite said first surface.
- 11. The system of claim 6 including an actuator for pivoting said first support about said first axis.
- 12. The system of claim 11 wherein said actuator pivots said second support about said first axis.
- 13. A system for packaging a plurality of stacks of product into a case, comprising:a matrix former comprising a center portion and first and second side portions, said first side portion being movable relative to said center portion, each of said center portion and first and second side portions comprising a support wall having an upper surface and a lower surface and a sidewall projecting from said support wall upper surface, said matrix former being pivotable about a first axis; a first actuator connected between said first side portion lower surface and said center portion lower surface for moving said first side portion relative to said center portion; and a case support comprising a first surface for receiving a case having an opening and at least one holder for securing a case to said first surface, said case support being pivotable about said first axis between a first position wherein said first surface faces away from said matrix former and a second position wherein said first surface faces toward said matrix former.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein said first actuator comprises a pneumatic actuator.
- 15. The system of claim 13 wherein said first and second side portion support walls lie in a plane angled with respect to the horizontal.
- 16. The system of claim 13 wherein said second side portion is movable relative to said center portion.
- 17. The system of claim 16 including a second actuator connected between said second side portion lower surface and said center portion lower surface for moving said second side portion relative to said center portion.
- 18. The system of claim 17 wherein said second actuator is a pneumatic actuator.
- 19. The system of claim 17 wherein said first and second side portion support walls lie in a plane angled with respect to the horizontal.
- 20. A system for packaging a plurality of stacks of product into a case, comprising:a matrix former comprising a center portion and first and second side portions, said first and second side portions being movable relative to said center portion, each of said center portion and first and second side portions comprising a support wall having an upper surface and a lower surface and a sidewall projecting from said support wall upper surface, said matrix former being pivotable about a first axis; a first actuator connected between said first side portion lower surface and said center portion lower surface for moving said first side portion relative to said center portion; a second actuator connected between said second side portion lower surface and said center portion lower surface for moving said second side portion relative to said center portion; a case support comprising a first surface for receiving a case having an opening and at least one holder for securing a case to said first surface, said case support being pivotable about said first axis between a first position wherein said first surface faces away from said matrix former and a second position wherein said first surface faces toward said matrix former; and a third actuator operably connected to said matrix former and to said case support, said third actuator being operable to pivot said matrix former about said first axis independently of said case support from a first position wherein said first and second side portion support walls lie in a non-vertical plane angled with respect to the horizontal and a second position, to pivot said case support about said first axis independently of said matrix former, and to pivot said matrix former and said case support about said first axis concurrently.
- 21. A system for packaging a plurality of stacks of product into a case, comprising:a matrix former comprising a support wall and a sidewall projecting from said support wall, said matrix former being pivotable about a first axis between a first position wherein said support wall is angled at a first, non-vertical angle with respect to the horizontal and a second position; and a case support comprising a first surface for receiving a case having an opening and at least one holder for securing a case to said first surface, said case support being pivotable about said first axis between a first position wherein said first surface faces away from said matrix former and a second position wherein said first surface faces toward said matrix former.
