Claims
- 1. A pavement marking article comprising a first exposed surface and a second surface that has disposed thereon an adhesive composition for adhering the article to a pavement substrate,
the adhesive composition comprising the reaction product of: an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a Tg less than 0° C.; a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and 0-10 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
- 2. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprises a homopolymer having a solubility parameter of no greater than 10.50 and a Tg greater than 15° C.
- 3. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprises a homopolymer having a solubility parameter of greater than 10.50 and a Tg greater than 15° C.
- 4. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the amount of the acrylic acid ester is about 55-90 parts by weight and the amount of the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is about 10-45 parts by weight.
- 5. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the amount of the acrylic acid ester is about 60-85 parts by weight.
- 6. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the amount of the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is about 15-40 parts by weight.
- 7. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the amount of the polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is about 0-5 parts by weight.
- 8. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the acrylic acid ester comprises isooctyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, isononyl acrylate, isodecyl acrylate, decyl acrylate, lauryl acrylate, hexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, octadecyl acrylate, or a combination thereof.
- 9. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the acrylic acid ester comprises isooctyl acrylate, or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
- 10. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprises 3,3,5 trimethylcyclohexyl acrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, isobornyl acrylate, N-octyl acrylamide, t-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, propyl methacrylate, or a combination thereof.
- 11. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprises isobornyl acrylate.
- 12. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprises acrylic acid, itaconic acid, N,N dimethylacrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrolidone, N-vinyl caprolactam, acrylonitrile, tetrahydrofuryl acrylate, glycidyl acrylate, 2-phenoxyethylacrylate, benzylacrylate, carboxyethyl acrylate, or a combination thereof.
- 13. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprises acrylic acid.
- 14. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the adhesive composition comprises the reaction product of isooctyl acrylate and isobornyl acrylate.
- 15. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the first surface of the article comprises a retroreflective element.
- 16. The pavement marking article of claim 1 being in the form of a tape.
- 17. The pavement marking article of claim 16, wherein the first surface of the tape is retroreflective.
- 18. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the adhesive composition comprises the reaction product of the acrylic acid ester, the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a crosslinking agent.
- 19. The pavement marking article of claim 18, wherein the amount of the crosslinking agent is about 0.01 to about 0.50 parts per 100 parts of the acrylic acid ester, the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and the polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
- 20. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the adhesive composition further comprises a tackifier miscible in the adhesive composition.
- 21. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the adhesive composition comprises a tackifier in an amount ranging from about 1-50 parts per 100 parts acrylate containing polymer.
- 22. The pavement marking article of claim 1, wherein the adhesive composition has a Tg ranging from between about −25° C. to about +10° C.
- 23. A pavement marking article comprising a surface provided with an adhesive composition for adhering the pavement marking article to a pavement substrate,
the adhesive composition comprising the reaction product of: 55-90 parts by weight of an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a Tg less than 0° C.; 10-45 parts by weight of a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and 0-10 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
- 24. A method of marking a pavement substrate comprising affixing the pavement marking article of claim 1 to a pavement substrate
- 25. The method of claim 24, comprising affixing the article directly to the pavement substrate.
- 26. A method of marking a pavement substrate comprising applying an adhesive composition to a pavement substrate, the adhesive composition comprising the reaction product of:
an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a Tg less than 0° C., a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and 0-10 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and affixing a pavement marking article to the adhesive composition.
- 27. The method of claim 26, comprising applying the adhesive composition directly to the pavement substrate.
- 28. A retroreflective article comprising a surface provided with an adhesive composition comprising the reaction product of:
an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a Tg less than 0° C.; a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and 0-10 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
- 29. The retroreflective article of claim 28, wherein the amount of the acrylic acid ester is about 60-90 parts by weight and the amount of the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is about 10-40 parts by weight.
- 30. A raised pavement marker that comprises:
(a) a pavement marker body having upper and lower surfaces and an apparent flexural modulus of at least about 50,000 psi and (b) a pressure sensitive adhesive layer disposed upon the lower surface of the marker, wherein the adhesive has:
(i) a transition region that begins at a frequency of about 10,000 radians/s or more and extends to a frequency of about 100 radians/s or less at about 25° C.; and (ii) a minimum shear modulus of about 1×105 Pa at an impact frequency of about 100 radians/s at 25° C.; and (iii) a shear modulus value of about 1×104 to 2×105 Pa at a frequency of 1 rad/sec at 25° C.
- 31. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive comprises:
(i) about 50 to 70 wt-% polyoctene; and (ii) about 30 to 40 wt-% tackifier.
- 32. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive comprises:
(i) about 60 to 85 wt-% isooctyl acrylate; (ii) about 3 to 20 wt-% isobornyl acrylate; (iii) about 0.1 to 3 wt-% acrylic acid; and (iv) about 10 to 25 wt-% tackifier.
- 33. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive comprises:
(i) about 40 to 60 wt-% polybutadiene; and (ii) about 40 to 60 wt-% tackifier.
- 34. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive comprises:
(i) about 40 to 60 wt-% natural rubber; and (ii) about 40 to 60 wt-% tackifier.
- 35. The raised pavement marker of claim 30 further comprising a conformance layer.
- 36. The raised pavement marker of claim 35 wherein the conformance layer has a tensile yield point of about 13 to 30 N.
- 37. The raised pavement marker of claim 31 wherein the adhesive further comprises about 1 to 10 wt-% polypropylene.
- 38. The raised pavement marker of claim 37 wherein the adhesive comprises about 58 wt-% polyoctene; about 5 wt-% polypropylene; and about 31 wt-% tackifier.
- 39. The raised pavement marker of claim 33 wherein the adhesive comprises about 32 wt-% polybutadiene; about 8 wt-% of a styrene/butadiene copolymer; about 40 wt-% of an α-pinene tackifier and about 10 wt-% of a hydrocarbon tackifier.
- 40. The raised pavement marker of claim 34 wherein the adhesive comprises about 45 wt-% natural rubber and about 55 wt-% β-pinene tackifier.
- 41. The raised pavement marker of claim 30 wherein the marker is a multi-component marker.
- 42. The raised pavement marker of claim 30 wherein the marker is a one-piece, molded marker.
- 43. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive has a shear modulus of about 2×104 to 1×105 Pa at a frequency of 1 rad/sec at 25° C.
- 44. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive has a shear modulus of about 2×105 Pa or greater at a frequency of 100 rad/sec at 25° C.
- 45. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive has a shear modulus of about 5×105 Pa or greater at a frequency of 100 rad/sec at 25° C.
- 46. The raised pavement marker of claim 30, wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive has a shear modulus of about 2×105 to 5×107 Pa at a frequency of 100 to 1000 rad/sec at 25° C.
- 47. A marked road surface, comprising a raised pavement marker of claim 30 adhered to the road surface.
