Claims
- 1. A material shaping machine comprising:
a frame; a work-piece holder; a tool holder, for rotatably holding a tool, wherein a computer performs real-time tool path calculations, based upon stored mathematical representations of a desired work-piece surface and stored mathematical representations of an actual tool geometry, by calculating a desired position of a tool cutting edge relative a measured position of said tool cutting edge and a measured position of said work-piece, and adjusting a distance between said desired tool cutting edge and said measured position of said tool cutting edge in a first direction, so that said tool cutting edge reaches said desired position.
- 2. The material shaping machine of claim 1, wherein said machine comprises manipulation means for providing a relative movement of said work-piece and said tool cutting edge in a second direction and a third direction, said manipulation means being operated other than through computer control.
- 3. The material shaping machine of claim 2, wherein said machine has sensors to determine said position of said work-piece relative said tool cutting edge and to send the position data to said computer.
- 4. The material shaping machine of claim 3, wherein said computer software calculates a mathematical representation of the desired shape of said work-piece surface after machining, and uses said representation together with stored information regarding the shape of said tool and said tool cutting edge to control said relative distance between said desired position of said tool cutting edge and said measured position of said tool cutting edge.
- 5. The material shaping machine of claim 4, wherein said representation is an algebraic formula.
- 6. The material shaping machine of claim 4, wherein said representation is a parametric formula.
- 7. The material shaping machine of claim 4, wherein said tool holder is slidable relative said work-piece holder and said frame, to provide movement in said first direction.
- 8. The material shaping machine of claim 7, wherein said machine has reciprocating means for selectively moving said tool holder in said first direction, said reciprocating means being controlled by software running on said computer; and where said reciprocating means is controlled by said computer software to move said tool holder corresponding to any detected movement of said workpiece by said manipulation means.
- 9. The material shaping machine of claim 8, wherein said work-piece is rotatably held in said work-piece holder, to provide said second direction of movement of said work-piece.
- 10. The material shaping machine of claim 9, wherein said first direction, said third direction and a rotation axis of said second direction are generally perpendicular to each other.
- 11. The material shaping machine of claim 8, wherein said work-piece is slidably held in said work-piece holder, to provide said second direction of movement of said work-piece.
- 12. The material shaping machine of claim 11, wherein said first direction, said second direction and said third direction are generally perpendicular to each other.
- 13. The material shaping machine of claim 1, wherein said work-piece is slidably held in said work-piece holder, to provide said first direction of movement of said work-piece.
- 14. The material shaping machine of claim 13, wherein said machine has reciprocating means for selectively moving said work-piece holder in said first direction, said reciprocating means being controlled by software running on said computer; and where said reciprocating means is controlled by said computer software to move said work-piece holder corresponding to any detected movement of said workpiece by said manipulation means.
- 15. The material shaping machine of claim 14, wherein said work-piece is rotatably held in said work-piece holder, to provide said second direction of movement of said work-piece.
- 16. The material shaping machine of claim 15, wherein said first direction, said third direction and a rotation axis of said second direction are generally perpendicular to each other.
- 17. The material shaping machine of claim 14, wherein said work-piece is slidably held in said work-piece holder, to provide said second direction of movement of said work-piece.
- 18. The material shaping machine of claim 17, wherein said first direction, said second direction and said third direction are generally perpendicular to each other.
- 19. The material shaping machine of claim 1, wherein said computer is connected to said machine via a standard computer interface port.
