Claims
- 1. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly for vaporizing a liquidfied gas and for increasing the temperature of a vaporized gaseous material above an initial value, comprising:
- a source of liquidfied gas at an initial temperature,
- an elongated tubular pressure shell having an input connected to said source of liquidfied gas and an output for a heated vaporized gaseous material,
- means forming spaced baffles arranged along the length of said tubular pressure shell between the input and output thereof,
- said baffles including a plurality of apertures therein for passage of gaseous material through said tubular pressure shell,
- pebble elements contained within said tubular pressure shell for storing heat and for transferring heat to the liquified gas entering said tubular shell to vaporize the same and to the gaseous material flowing through said shell,
- means to heat said pebble elements to a predetermined temperature above said initial temperature,
- mixer means having inlet means connected to receive the heated gaseous material heated to a first temperature by said pebble elements during passage through said tubular pressure shell,
- said mixer means including outlet means for the gaseous material flowing through said mixer means, and
- liquified gas supplying means connected to said mixer means for introducing into said mixer means a liquified gas at said initial temperature to cool the heated gaseous material entering said mixer means from said tubular pressure shell whereby the temperature of the gaseous material flowing out of said outlet means is cooled to a temperature below said first temperature.
- 2. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said means to heat said pebble elements includes a plurality of electrical resistance heaters, and tube means extending into said pebble elements in said tubular shell receiving said electrical resistance heaters.
- 3. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 further including a housing shell for said baffles, said housing shell being located within an spaced from said tubular pressure shell, and insulation means being positioned between said shells.
- 4. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said plurality of apertures are arranged in a circular orientation,
- said pressure shell of the pebble bed evaporator and superheater assembly being arranged in a vertical orientation with said baffles horizontally disposed, and
- groove means in the baffle surface interconnecting the apertures in a circular orientation to provide a gas passage along the surface of said baffle in the event that a pebble element should overlie one or more of said apertures.
- 5. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said plurality of apertures are arranged in a predetermined orientation,
- said pebble bed evaporator and superheater assembly being arranged in a vertical orientation, and
- groove means in the baffle surface interconnecting at least some of the apertures to provide a gas passage along the surface of said baffle in the event that a pebble element should overlie one or more of said apertures.
- 6. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said plurality of apertures are of a given diameter,
- said pebble elements having a diameter greater than the diameter of said apertures, and
- groove means in the surface of said baffles interconnecting at least some of the apertures to provide a gas passage along the surface of said baffle in the event that a pebble should overlie one or more of said apertures.
- 7. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said mixer means is a pebble-bed mixer.
- 8. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 further including means to support said tubular pressure shell of the pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly in a vertical orientation while said mixer means is oriented in a generally horizontal orientation.
- 9. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 further including means to support said pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly in a vertical orientation while said mixer means is oriented in a generally horizontal orientation.
- 10. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said baffles are arranged in a spaced vertical orientation,
- said apertures in said baffles being disposed in a circular orientation in a plurality of concentric circles, and
- groove means in the surface of said baffles interconnecting the apertures of each concentric circle whereby a gas passage through said aperture is provided in the event that a pebble element overlies one or more of said apertures.
- 11. A pebble-bed evaporator and superheater assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said baffles are arranged in a spaced vertical orientation,
- said apertures in said baffles being disposed in a predetermined orientation, and
- groove means interconnecting at least some of the apertures whereby a gas passage through said interconnected apertures is provided in the event that a pebble element overlies one or more of said apertures.
