Claims
- 1. A pedal assembly for electronically controlling a vehicle comprising;
a housing having opposite sides, a pedal lever supported by said housing for pivotal movement about a pedal axis extending between said sides, a sensor arm movably supported by said housing, at least one sensing band supported by said housing, at least one sensor member supported by said sensor arm for movement with said sensor arm and co-acting with said sensing band, a braking mechanism for providing resistance to movement of said pedal lever about said pedal axis, said assembly characterized by said sensor arm and said braking mechanism being axially spaced along said pedal axis and disposed in radially overlapping relationship to one another.
- 2. An assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said sensor arm is supported by one of said housing sides and said braking mechanism is supported by the other of said housing sides.
- 3. An assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein said housing includes a central section extending between open first and second ends, a sensor cover closing said first end to define one of said housing sides, and a brake cover closing said second end to define the other housing side.
- 4. An assembly as set forth in claim 3 wherein said sensor cover supports said sensor arm and said brake cover supports said braking mechanism.
- 5. An assembly as set forth in claim 4 wherein said central section of said housing includes a inner cylindrical surface, at least one brake shoe movably supported by said brake cover for movement radially outwardly into engagement with said cylindrical surface for providing resistance to movement of said pedal lever, and a brake actuator interconnecting said brake shoe and said housing for moving said brake shoe into engagement with said inner cylindrical surface in response to pivotal movement of said pedal lever in a first direction.
- 6. An assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said brake actuator includes a biasing spring reacting between said housing and said brake shoe.
- 7. An assembly as set forth in claim 6 wherein said biasing spring comprises a coil spring having a central coil with a first end extending from said coil and engaging said brake shoe and a second end extending from said coil and engaging said housing.
- 8. An assembly as set forth in claim 7 including a pair of said brake shoes, each of said brake shoes extending arcuately from a pivot end pivotally supported by said brake cover to a distal end.
- 9. An assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said brake cover includes a post supporting each of said pivot ends of said brake shoes.
- 10. An assembly as set forth in claim 9 including one of said biasing springs at each of said posts with said distal end of each spring engaging said distal end of the adjacent brake shoe.
- 11. An assembly as set forth in claim 10 wherein each of said brake shoes includes a pad for frictional engaging inner cylindrical surface.
- 12. An assembly as set forth in claim 10 including a center partition in said central section, said second ends of said springs engaging said housing, a shaft extending through said covers and said partition, said pedal lever having a forked end with two tongs, said covers of said housing being disposed between said tongs with said tongs secured to said shaft and said brake cover for rotation therewith.
- 13. An assembly as set forth in claim 12 including a plurality of said sensing bands disposed arcuately at different radial distances from said sensor axis and including a plurality of sensor members on said sensor arm at said different radial distances from said sensor axis, each of said sensor members being paired with one of said sensor bands, said sensor bands being supported by said sensor cover.
- 14. An assembly as set forth in claim 13 wherein said sensor arm is pivotally supported by said sensor cover for pivotal movement about a sensor axis.
- 15. An assembly as set forth in claim 14 wherein said sensor axis is spaced from said pedal axis.
- 16. An assembly as set forth in claim 15 wherein said sensor axis in disposed on one diametrical side of said pedal axis and said sensor band and sensor member is disposed on the opposite diametrical side of said pedal axis.
- 17. An assembly as set forth in claim 16 including a mechanism of at least two elements interconnecting said sensor arm and said pedal lever for moving said sensor arm in response to movement of said pedal lever.
- 18. An assembly as set forth in claim 17 wherein at least one of said elements comprises a gear sector.
- 19. An assembly as set forth in claim 17 wherein said elements comprise a pedal gear secured to said shaft for rotation by said pedal lever about said pedal axis and a sensor gear secured to said sensor arm and in meshing engagement with said pedal gear for rotating said sensor arm about said sensor axis.
- 20. An assembly as set forth in claim 19 wherein said sensor arm includes a opening and said pedal axis is disposed in said opening to accommodate movement of said sensor arm and said sensor member radially through said pedal axis, said sensor gear being disposed in said opening.
- 21. An assembly as set forth in claim 20 including a plurality of said sensing bands disposed arcuately at different radial distances from said sensor axis and including a plurality of sensor members on said sensor arm at said different radial distances form said sensor axis, each of said sensor members being paired with one of said sensor bands.
- 22. An assembly as set forth in claim 21 including a biasing device applying a biasing force to said sensor arm for urging said sensor arm to rotate about said sensor axis.
- 23. An assembly as set forth in claim 22 including a stop to limit rotary movement of said sensor arm about said sensor axis in response to said biasing force applied by said biasing device.
