Claims
- 1. A peel assembly for use in separating a label from a backing, the label when on the backing forming a media, said peel assembly comprising: a housing; means for driving the backing through the housing; peel means for bending the backing therearound; and deflector means proximate to said peel means for deflecting the backing away from the label, wherein when the media passes over said peel means, the backing passes between said peel means and said deflector means and the label passes over said deflector means.
- 2. A peel assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein said peel means is a bar.
- 3. A peel assembly as defined in claim 2, wherein said peel means includes a corner around which the backing is bent to separate the label from the backing.
- 4. A peel assembly as defined in claim 3, wherein said peel means includes a relief under said corner, said deflector means deflecting the backing into said relief.
- 5. A peel assembly as defined in claim 4, wherein said relief is a concave channel in said bar.
- 6. A peel assembly as defined in claim 4, wherein said relief is a generally U-shaped cutout in said bar.
- 7. A peel assembly as defined in claim 4, wherein said relief is an angled surface under a top surface of said bar.
- 8. A peel assembly as defined in claim 4, wherein said deflector means comprises at least one roller.
- 9. A peel assembly as defined in claim 8, wherein said at least one roller is ribbed.
- 10. A peel assembly as defined in claim 9, wherein said at least one ribbed roller is rotatably mounted on a shaft.
- 11. A peel assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein said deflector means is at least one roller.
- 12. A peel assembly as defined in claim 11, wherein said at least one roller is ribbed.
- 13. A peel assembly as defined in claim 12, wherein said at least one ribbed roller is rotatably mounted on a shaft.
- 14. A peel assembly as defined in claim 1, further including supporting means proximate to said deflector means for supporting the label as the label exits the peel assembly.
- 15. A peel assembly as defined in claim 14, wherein said supporting means is at least one roller.
- 16. A peel assembly as defined in claim 15, wherein said at least one roller is ribbed.
- 17. A peel assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein said driving means applies low tension to the backing.
- 18. A method of dispensing a label from a peel assembly comprising the steps of:
providing a media, said media comprising a backing having at least one label releasably secured thereto; providing a peel assembly comprising a housing, means for driving the backing through the housing, peel means for bending the backing therearound, and deflector means proximate to said peel means for deflecting the backing away from the labels; passing said media over said peel means; passing said backing between said peel means and said deflector means; and passing said label over said deflector means.
- 19. A method as defined in claim 18, further including the step of providing supporting means proximate to said deflector means for supporting the labels as the labels exit the peel assembly.
- 20. A method as defined in claim 18, wherein said driving means applies low tension to the backing.
- 21. A peel assembly for use in separating a label from a backing, the label when on the backing forming a media, said peel assembly comprising: a housing; means for driving the backing through the housing; peel means for bending the backing therearound; deflector means proximate to said peel means for deflecting the backing away from the label; and supporting means proximate to said deflector means for supporting the label as the label exits the peel assembly, wherein when the media passes over said peel means, the backing passes between said peel means and said deflector means and the label passes over said deflector means and then over said supporting means.
- 22. A peel assembly as defined in claim 21, wherein said peel means is a bar.
- 23. A peel assembly as defined in claim 21, wherein said peel means includes a corner around which the backing is bent to separate the label from the backing.
- 24. A peel assembly as defined in claim 23, wherein said peel means includes a relief under said corner, said deflector means deflecting the backing into said relief.
- 25. A peel assembly as defined in claim 24, wherein said relief is a concave channel in said bar.
- 26. A peel assembly as defined in claim 24, wherein said relief is a generally U-shaped cutout in said bar.
- 27. A peel assembly as defined in claim 24, wherein said relief is an angled surface under a top surface of said bar.
- 28. A peel assembly as defined in claim 24, wherein said deflector means comprises at least one roller and said supporting means comprises at least one roller.
- 29. A peel assembly as defined in claim 28, wherein said at least one roller which comprises said deflector means is ribbed and said at least one roller which comprises said supporting means is ribbed.
- 30. A peel assembly as defined in claim 29, wherein said at least one ribbed roller which comprises said deflector means is rotatably mounted on a shaft.
- 31. A peel assembly as defined in claim 21, wherein said driving means applies low tension to the backing.
