- 1. In an inflatable self-contained penile implant consisting of a cylindrical member having a pressure chamber, a reservoir for inflating fluid and a pump operatively connected to transfer fluid from the reservoir to the pressure chamber, the improvement which comprises an improved pressure relief valve operatively connected to the pressure chamber, said valve having a cylindrical housing with an inlet with a restricted opening at one end; a passage connecting said inlet to the reservoir; at least one outlet intermediate the length of said passage communicating with the reservoir; a close fitting piston mounted in said passage between the inlet and the outlet, said piston having a piston face; an integral raised annular knife edge seal on said piston face enclosing an area of the face of said piston; and, a precalibrated spring for maintaining said seal seated about said restricted opening, said area of the piston face within the seal being significantly smaller than the total area of the piston face so that once the seal is initially unseated by fluid pressure from its position about the restricted opening a substantially larger force is available to move the piston back to expose the outlet and quickly open the valve and release fluid back to the reservoir.
