Claims
- 1. A people mover comprising:
- a people supporting track such as an escalator or a moving sidewalk;
- a drive apparatus formed of an electric motor having a substantially thin construction in the axial direction of the drive apparatus and including a motor rotor, and a drive wheel mounted coaxially with the rotor of the electric motor for rotation therewith at the same rotational speed as the motor rotor;
- said drive wheel directly driving the people supporting track.
- 2. The people mover according to claim 1, wherein the drive wheel of the drive apparatus is a drive sprocket acting on the people supporting track.
- 3. The people mover according to claim 2, wherein the people mover further comprises at least one handrail moving in the direction of motion of the people supporting track;
- the drive wheel of the driving apparatus being coupled directly or via a transmission element to drive the handrail.
- 4. The people mover according to claim 2, wherein the people supporting track includes a continuous step chain, said drive apparatus being placed in the people mover in a location where the drive wheel is within the step chain of the people supporting track and the plane of the drive wheel is parallel to the loop formed by the step chain.
- 5. The people mover according to claim 1, wherein the people mover further comprises at least one handrail moving in the direction of motion of the people supporting track,
- the drive wheel of the drive apparatus being coupled directly or via a transmission element to drive the handrail.
- 6. The people mover according to claim 5, wherein the people supporting track includes a continuous step chain, said drive apparatus being placed in the people mover in a location where the drive wheel is within the step chain of the people supporting track and the plane of the drive wheel is parallel to the loop formed by the step chain.
- 7. The people mover according to claim 1, wherein the people supporting track includes a continuous step chain, said drive apparatus being placed in the people mover in a location where the drive wheel is within the step chain of the people supporting track and the plane of the drive wheel is parallel to the loop formed by the step chain.
- 8. The people mover according to claim 1, wherein the people supporting track includes a continuous step chain, said drive apparatus being placed in the people mover in a location where the drive wheel is within the step chain of the people supporting track and the plane of the drive wheel is parallel to the loop formed by the step chain.
- 9. The people mover of claim 1 wherein said electric motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor.
- 10. The people mover of claim 1 wherein said drive wheel is mounted to the motor rotor.
- 11. A drive apparatus for use as a source of power for a people mover such as an escalator or a moving sidewalk and having a people supporting track, said drive apparatus comprising:
- an electric motor having a substantially thin construction in the axial direction of the drive apparatus and including a motor rotor, and a drive wheel mounted coaxially with the rotor of the electric motor for rotational therewith at the same rotational speed as the motor rotor;
- said drive wheel directly driving the people supporting track.
- 12. The people mover according to claim 11, wherein the people mover further comprises at least one handrail moving in the direction of motion of the people supporting track;
- the drive wheel of the driving apparatus being coupled directly or via a transmission element to drive the handrail.
- 13. The people mover of claim 11 wherein said electric motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor.
- 14. The people mover of claim 11 wherein said drive wheel is mounted to the motor rotor.
- 15. A people mover comprising:
- a people supporting track such as an escalator or a moving sidewalk arranged to move in a desired direction;
- a pair of supporting structures extending adjacent to said people supporting track and parallel to the desired direction of movement thereof with the people supporting track disposed therebetween.
- a drive apparatus formed of an electric motor including a motor rotor, and a drive wheel mounted coaxially with the motor rotor for rotation therewith, said electric motor, in the axial direction, being substantially thin in construction and located between the drive wheel and one of the two supporting structures; said drive wheel directly driving the people supporting track.
- 16. The people mover of claim 15 wherein said drive wheel rotates at the same rotational speed as the motor rotor.
