Claims
- 1. In a method of alkylating an aromatic compound, the improvement comprising using an effective amount of a catalyst composition comprising a modified porous microcomposite catalyst comprising a perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer containing pendant groups selected from the group consisting of: sulfonic acid groups, metal sulfonate groups, alkyl metal sulfonate groups, metal halide sulfonate groups, alkyl metal halide sulfonate groups, sulfonic acid/Lewis acid complex groups, and any combination of said groups, wherein the polymer is entrapped within and highly dispersed throughout a network of inorganic oxide, said network having a plurality of metal oxy species bonded thereto, said metal oxy species being selected from the group consisting of a metal oxy halide, an alkyl metal oxy halide, and an alkyl metal oxy.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer contains sulfonic acid groups and metal halide sulfonate groups and is about 10 to about 25% by weight of the microcomposite.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the inorganic oxide of the network is silica and the metal oxy species is aluminum chloride.
