Claims
- 1. A polymer having as a repeating unit ##STR15## wherein R is a divalent radical selected from the group consisting of ##STR16## wherein X is halogen selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, or any stable combination thereof within the same molecule;
- n is an integer of from 1 to 4;
- y is an integer of from 0 to 10; and
- z is an integer of from 0 to (10-y).
- 2. The polymer of claim 1 wherein R is cyclic.
- 3. The polymer of claim 1 wherein R is noncyclic aliphatic.
- 4. The polymer of claim 1 wherein X is fluorine.
- 5. The polymer of claim 4 wherein R is noncyclic aliphatic.
- 6. The polymer of claim 4 wherein R is cyclic.
- 7. The polymer of claim 6 wherein n is 4.
- 8. The polymer of claim 7 wherein the terminal moieties of said polymer are perfluorocyclobutenyl.
- 9. The polymer of claim 7 which is further characterized by:
- a. a boiling point of 50.degree. C. at a pressure of 1 micron Hg;
- b. characteristic absorption in the infrared region of the spectrum substantially corresponding with that of FIG. 3; and
- c. a fluorine resonance spectrum at 56.4 MHz with principal characteristic absorption peaks at 108, 113, 117, 120, 121 to 133 (multiplet), 139, and 140, expressed in .delta. units relative to CFCl .sub.3.
- 10. A method for preparing polymers having as a repeating unit ##STR17## wherein R is a divalent radical selected from the group consisting of ##STR18## wherein X is halogen selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, or a stable combination thereof within the same molecule;
- n is an integer of from 1 to 4;
- y is an integer of from 0 to 10; and
- z is an integer of from 0 to (10-y) which comprises:
- a. charging a reaction vessel with anhydrous cesium fluoride, a solubilizing amount of an anhydrous, water miscible nonpolar aprotic solvent, and perfluorocyclohexane-1,4-dione;
- b. admixing the compounds named in (a) until a uniform finely divided slurry is formed;
- c. adding to the slurry formed in (b) a perhaloalkene having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms and a fluorine atom on at least each of the two carbon atoms connected by the double bond;
- d. admixing the perhaloalkene and the slurry until a relatively constant pressure is attained in the reaction vessel; and
- e. recovering the polymer from the reaction medium.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the cesium fluoride, perfluorohexane-1,4-dione, and perhaloalkene are employed in molar ratio of approximately 2:1:1.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein step (b) is carried out at ambient temperatures for from about 2 to about 12 hours.
- 13. The method of claim 10 wherein the perhaloalkene is a perfluoroalkene and X is fluorine.
- 14. The method of claim 10 wherein step (d) is carried out at ambient temperatures for from about 36 to about 60 hours.
- 15. The method of claim 10 wherein step (e) comprises recovering the polymer in a cold trap under a partial vacuum.
- 16. The method of claim 10 wherein step (e) comprises a solvent extraction step.
